Steam on Mac? I might just play TF2 a bit more
As most of you probably know, I’ve been a little bit inactive in the Team Fortress 2 space lately. There’s a bunch of reasons for that: not being awesome enough to have obtained any hats; playing too much WoW, holding down a full time job in Mass Effect 2…
The list goes on.
One of the main reasons though is that I’m just plain lazy. And that I’m an Apple fan boy who spends all his time booted into OS X. Those two points are more inter-related than you might think. You see, TF2 and Steam require an antiquated and inelegant operating system called Windows to run. Thanks to the awesome power of my Mac, I can dual boot into Windows to do this. However it requires me shutting down everything else I was doing, restarting, chugging through an ugly and foreign UI, then booting up Steam, and eventually connecting to TF2 some minutes later.
Where as to play WoW, I just stay planted on the couch safe in OS X land, and Command-Tab between that and the very important twitter session I had running.
All that looks like it’s about to change though
Steam on OS X?
The Apple and Valve fanboy communities have come together over the last week with rumors floating around that Steam and Valve’s Source engine games are coming to OS X. Awesome huh? We’re talking about a May launch here – which is really not too far off.
This is all part of the new client beta that launched recently. One of the subtle changes introduced that only the web-dev geeks picked up on, is that Steam is now using Webkit to drive the UI. What is Webkit? It’s the core HTML rendering engine that is used on the Safari and Chrome web browsers. The old Steam client was really just a thin layer around Internet Explorer – which meant Windows only. Webkit is cross platform and will happily run on OS X.
And being able to just hang out in Steam will be fun. Steam chat is great, but I can only use it when I’m on Steam – which is when I’m in Windows, which is only an hour or so a day if I’m lucky – and for that hour I’m cramming in as much gaming as possible, so I’m probably not wanting to chat to you. Now if we could get an open XMPP chat protocol, it would be even better… (HINT HINT Valve)
So expect to see me around a bit more – both in game, and just lurking on Steam. Anything that help me be a lazy gamer even more lazily is all good. It also means I can actually chat and catch up with you guys.
More eye candy
Here’s a few more teasers that Valve dropped in with their inimitable hype machine style.

Update – official now
Here’s the official word from Valve.
March 8, 2010 – Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve’s gaming service, and Source, Valve’s gaming engine, to the Mac.
Steam and Valve’s library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.
“As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients,” said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. “The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.”
“Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac,” said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. “Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.”
“We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,” said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. “The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows.”
Portal 2 will be Valve’s first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. “Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,” said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. “We’re always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.”
Cheers to Drexer for the tip in the comments

All RIIIIIIIIGHT. I love the apple-styled ads.
Hopefully this’ll help other game makers consider the Mac as a legitimate platform as well. I’m a bit tired of playing things through CrossOver on my part, especially because TF2 takes up well over 1.2 gigs of memory when run through the emulation. :/

I’m with ya 100%, madlep. Even if the only thing to happen in the last few weeks was the UI and WebKit update, I’d be extremely pleased. Anything to get me far, far away from IE is a good thing. Also, the typography in the UI update is especially smexy.
And it would put back 65GB (currently dedicated to Windows 7, and the mere 6-8 games I have installed) right where they belong, holding games in OS X.
Oh, did you hear Portal 2 is coming to the Mac (see: Game Informer)? I think that will especially make a big push for developers.
If nothing else, Valve is great at doing parodies. The “Hello” ad is quite the laugh.

For example: I would have to drop everything I’m doing right now; close iTunes, DreamWeaver, Adium, Skype, Things, Mail, Tweetie, etc. just to reboot into Windows, load Steam and add Madlep to my friends list.
And speaking of which, Madlep, you should probably correct the url to your profile on the first image to be “https://steamcommunity.com/id/madlep”. The current url just sends us to the Community homepage.
Thanks, mate!

I laughed at the Sentry Gun standing next to the Portal Droid.
It’s funny, because the Sentry Gun (PC) can be repaired and upgraded, but when the Droid (Mac) gets broken you have to get a new one. See what has been done there?

As another Boot Camper, I’m incredibly glad this is happening too. I don’t think I’ll be able to drop my partition just yet, but this is a great move for Mac gaming in general.
Jeziah responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 12:58 pm #
Oh no, you did NOT just call PC “antiquated and inelegant”. That’s just as ignorant as calling Mac a “powerhouse” (dual-booting… what is this, the eighties?). I prefer my computers functional, upgradeable, powerful, personal, cheap and reliable, and if you think that a smooth white surface is enough to make up for the underpowered system and the incompatibility and inferiority of the software, then hey, that’s fine by me, but do NOT go calling PC “antiquated and inelegant” just because Steve Jobs tells you that culture is a thing that can only be attained by overspending on his products.
It’s quite funny to me how Macinstosh users always show off the ability to boot Windows as their most useful asset, when the emulation is poor and the hardware is so weak (and expensive for it). It’s as if all you care about is the “superiority” you show in spending extra money for a simpler, dumbed-down OS, so you can say you’re “new age” as you try to emulate an older, Windows operating system so that you can play along with everyone else, the 85% of the market who were so unsophisticated to have bought A FUNCTIONAL PRODUCT.
I suppose that you 15% are worth the effort of coddling to Valve, but not even their benevolency can look you straight in the monitor and say you made a good choice (see PC being compared to a omniview upgradeable, repairable, 2-grenades-to-take-down Sentry, while Mac is compared to a 30-degree view, literal pushover Portal turret/iPod being compared to a sandwich). And that’s basically where you stand in the world of computing.

I never really were a fan of the Mac tbh. It’s not because of the trademarked PC fanboy ‘apple suks lolol’ but because I’m very into fiddling with hardware, overclocking things and whatnot. If bought a PC yourself at the same price equivalent as a Mac, the PC almost always has way higher performance. There’s also the customizability as well as part for part upgrading.
Mac’s are simple though. You don’t need to know what part fits where and it makes purchases helluva lot easier, amongst other things.
I see very many biased ads that state lies about their competitors, particularily with Mac and PCs. It makes me sad. :C
gelugon2105 responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 2:40 pm #
One look at that phrase lambasting the PC and I already know there’s going to be some flame-storm.
Really, MACs and PCs are like oranges and tomatoes. Not worth comparing them, people, as they have little in common besides being able to plug into the same electrical socket.

gelugon2105 responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 2:46 pm #
And really, considering that the consoles are really pinching away games from the PC (and MAC) platform(s), we really ought to be thankful that Valve is still thinking of the machines that are sitting on top (or inside of) of tables.
gelugon2105 responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 2:52 pm #
Let us not forget how Lionhead Studios and Peter Molyneux, who once developed games for the humble desktop (or laptop, whichever applicable) machines (both PC and MAC), turned their backs to their once erstwhile market for their games. Really, if Valve can spread the love to MACs, then let it be! You really don’t want Valve announcing the next Half-Life game or the next Source engine to be fucking console-exclusive, would you?
Considering that Valve has re-conciliated with Microsoft somewhat over the marketing for the Left 4 Dead IPs, any of you wouldn’t want desktops to lose out on the next Left 4 Dead game just because Steam can’t get a big enough market through the desktop platforms, eh?
gelugon2105 responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 2:56 pm #
I am a PC user, but do please support Valve’s expansion of Steam to the MACs. The day that Gabe Newell – who had publicly proclaimed that developing games for the consoles are a waste of time and talent – get kicked out by the Board of Directors of the company that he founded himself is the day that the death-knell for the desktops as gaming platforms is sounded.
gelugon2105 responded on 08 Mar 2010 at 3:11 pm #
And please don’t overlook the fact that Certain Affinity – a developer known to develop games exclusively for the consoles (the Xbox 360 in particular) – has worked with Valve on the first Left 4 Dead. Without a doubt, Certain Affinity is likely to have some claim to the Left 4 Dead IP. The groundwork for the Left 4 Dead IP being snatched out of Valve’s hands has already been laid, people.
Do keep in mind also that many people are bitching about how Steam does not let customers re-sell purchased games.
Also, can anyone look for sales breakdowns (by platform) of Valve’s games? I can’t find these (only news of I would not be surprised if the console versions – especially Left 4 Dead 2’s – outsold the desktop ones.

By the way, I don’t understand how come that many people are still beating on the dead horse of ‘Macs are un-upgradeable’. Seriously, specially considering that OSX(which is what Steam is going to port for, a piece of software not a piece of hardware) can be installed in any Windows PC.
And at least it doesn’t need a 350€ Ultimate edition to have the EXTREME functionality of interchanging languages.
Sorry, couldn’t forgive that. It’s one of the current things that most annoy me about Windows 7.
