Demo V Solly update
I’m going to try something new now, and start ranting/whining about the update BEFORE it comes out. Hah, I’m different. Take that conformity!
“But why?” you ask. Why am I getting upset over an update that just started and hasn’t even gone into day 1 (or 2, depending on your perception)? Why am I getting upset about the update for my two (of three) main classes? Why not wait and see what will actually happen?
Why are the soldier and demoman’s chests blurred out in the picture above?
Honestly, it’s just anxiety. The update came out today, and I joined UC1, and everyone on my team was a soldier, except for one guy. And he was a demoman.
I’m rather dreading what will happen when the update actually comes out if this is the result already. Okay, given, they’re probably trying to win their class that shiny 4th weapon (which might not even turn out to be all that interesting anyway), but holy crap.
_________________________________________________________________________________

So. Ever wondered why people keep complaining that your team “has too many snipers/spy/other-non-assault-class”? “We need more soldiers/demos” etc etc? It’s because they’re massive spam classes. Big on area denial due to concentrated explosive power that doesn’t require much accuracy. It’s alright when there’s the appropriate amount and the map is good but when any more 5 are those it becomes a pain to play against. Especially demomen. And those stickies. Soooo many stickies…
Apart from that it’s probably a little personal too. I like to think of it as “my class,” being the egotistical madman I am, rather than having everyone play it. Plus, the Spy update kind of pseudo-messed me up. The ambassador was a fairly good idea. The watches? Oh hey look at me I don’t need to care about cloak management I can camp here as long as I want. Oh hey look at me who needs stealth when I can just press mouse2 and spam the ammo boxes/health kits?
Yes I’m entitled to complain as someone who 2nds Spy (and only at about 15 hours less too).
________________________________________________________________________________

So, if you didn’t read any of the above, bottom line is I’m dreading the coming Soldier V Demoman update, because:
1) it’ll be a massive spamfest
2) the unlocks could be more noobish
3) class update rushes were rarely fun
It’s probably a bit more personal too; I’ve found myself occasionally getting a little bored of TF2 recently. Happens to everyone doesn’t it?
But no matter. CSS is $5 at the moment. I’ve picked it up and perchance will be avoiding TF2 for a couple of weeks while the madness cools off.

Cola responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 4:18 am #
Yeah, I’ll be avoiding it as well. It’s all the terror of achievement-based unlock class rushes mixed in with a week warm-up period.
Josh responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 4:28 am #
The reason the pictures are blury is whe you copied the picture, the buttons to the demoman and soldier pages weren’t copied as they were seperate images on top of them.
Smertnik responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 4:35 am #
I like class rushes. And Soldier/Demoman wars have been the most fun so far compared to the previous updates, especially for a Medic with Kritzkrieg.
Although I do admit that most CP maps are unplayable now.
Davie responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 4:59 am #
I’ve actually quite enjoyed the rush so far. While other rushes have caused massive amounts of RAEG and sadness (Scout/Pyro, amirite?) this update has brought with it pure, unfiltered, insane mayhem. There were more explosions two hours after the update than there has been in the entire history of TF2 up to this point. I actually find it quite fun to try and dodge three grenades and a sticky while joining seven other soldiers in a massive rocket barrage.
The classes do well balancing each other out, too. They’re both useful in many situations, so an entire team of Soldiers or Demos can defend a cart, unlike, say, an entire team of Scouts. CP maps are hard to win, but all it takes is a couple of good pushes, and the Demos really have to think about defending areas without the help of Heavies or Engies. So, overall, I’m looking forward to the rest of the update and the continuation of the rush.
Also, don’t say “Solly”. You only save TWO LETTERS. And no, it does NOT MAKE YOU LOOK COOL, OR PRO.
Cut it out.
n00bie51 responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 5:16 am #
I’m solly that bothers you.
I think Davie kind of has a point with the explosive mayhem that occurs, so this update can’t be as bad as the Scout or Medic updates were with hordes of noobs playing classes that were impractical to be stacked.
I’m in favor of the Soldier, but just because there are a crapload of people playing that class I think I’ll be playing more Demo Man to even it out. I like to play the classes that other people aren’t playing when I join a server.
strangemodule responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 5:19 am #
I’m actually going to enjoying it. Plenty of chance to practice airblasting as a Pyro.
And to be honest, I know in advance that I WILL farm the achievements; I’d rather get them over with, test out the new stuff a little bit, then go play in a regular server as the class of my choice.
kanodin responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 6:06 am #
The rockets, my god the rockets. Never have I seen such madness. It is glorious yet terrible to see a dozen rockets going in both directions at all times.
That said I intend to get 100 points with both the soldier and demoman just incase your personal war contribution leads to a reward and because I don’t care who gets the weapon.
St. Vincent responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 6:24 am #
Bullshit. Update class rushes are ALWAYS fun. You bitch about being bored with the game and having the game shaken up in th same breath. Go away, then and enjoy css.

I will admit, class rushes are a bit stressful, BUT SO IS THE GAME IN GENERAL. Get over it, this FPS is sooooo different from others.
I just hope that the new unlocks will be like some of the others: more different than the originals than BETTER than the originals (unlike, say, the buffed FaN or the Uber-saw).
St. Vincent responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 7:22 am #
FYI, for people wanting to help one side without playing that specific class:
1) play medic and only heal/über/kritz your chosen side
2) play as the opposing faction and practice catching nades or rockets with your face.
3) play pyro and deflect munitions from the opposing side
any other devious ideas that aren’t cheating?
Dade responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 7:28 am #
Don’t forget the basic agreement to not initiate an attack on your fellow soldiers. If i get attacked by a soldier, then i will respond in kind. But if we agree to avoid each other, we can continue on our god-given, glorious crusade to rid this world of those bothersome Demomen.
Go Team Soldier!!!

I think its fun. I have been playing on the gravedigger companys egypt 2fort mod and its so fun killing all the noob demos with the bat they dont know what they’re doing.
. Anyways I think the rush is fun except in servers where you cannot play anything else than demo and solly since, the sollys just spam all the time…. and the demos cant do anything about it……but normal servers with a few extra soldiers and demos instead of snipers that dont do anything is great! sorry for the long comment.
St. Vincent responded on 12 Dec 2009 at 8:39 am #
Or! Go spy, and dress as a friendly soldier (if you are on team soldier). All the enemy demos will attack you instead!
Actually that is a pretty ineffective tactic.

This is basically the same complaints that people play as one class when a class update comes out. Granted it’ll last a little longer than the others, but suck it up and wait it out, it’ll die down like all the rest. At least you won’t have to walk into a hail of rockets and stickies when the Engie updates comes out! Oh wait, everyone’s going to complain about that too.

I can’t stand exclusivity in games, and valve has continued to pile it on. Until now, I’d held out hope that an eventual trading/crafting system could net me the medal, but single unique and lesser unique items make the completionist in me cry- and that’s not even considering the idea of giving a class MORE PEOPLE ARE BETTER AT an additional weapon. Valve is starting to leverage some questionable stuff- we will see where it goes.

Its actually a good time to play 5-cp maps, they are less spam-friendly than payload or ctf or koth.
This is a great opportunity for people to learn how to rocket or sticky jump and aim with projectiles. Soldier and Demo can be very skill intensive so its hard to get boring when there still so much to improve. Fun times.
GarionE responded on 14 Dec 2009 at 5:22 am #
I say fuck both of them, but if you want, decide which class you DON’T want to get the 4th weapon, i.e. Demo.
Hence why currently Soldier is winning.
Dr. Strangelove responded on 14 Dec 2009 at 7:37 am #
I’ll wager a guess right now that the 4th weapon may not even be a weapon. After all, what are you gonna give to someone like the demoman?
The only thing that jumps to mind is like a Battlefield 1942-style detpack — one BIG boom, and then you’d have to go back to the supply cabinet. The one thing capable of bringing down that Loch Ness monster.
That, or perhaps put those scrumpy bottles to use and maybe make a molotov cocktail weapon? AoE fire damage for several seconds, with a recharge time of 10-15 seconds to fish out another bottle? Could be put out with a pyro’s airblast? Has a throwing arc similar to the Sniper’s Jarate? (I would think it might reduce spawn-camping when you’re covering your own spawn point in flames.)
Who knows. Either way I’m looking forward to the new weapons.
gelugon2105 responded on 14 Dec 2009 at 5:48 pm #
Probably your mentioning of Counter-strike: Source was a really bad idea. That game lacks innovation and a true competitive advantage really. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Battlefield series are much superior compared to what is probably Valve’s most unimpressive product (next to Day of Defeat).
As for the update, the class rush is there, of course, but it’s way more frantic this time and, I say, a good time to practice dodging explosive hurt.
That, and the baritone hollering and mewling for Medics is quite amusing to listen to. I generally play Medic, and now is a good time as any to earn all those Medic/Soldier and Medic/Demoman achievements – provided one knows how to dodge all that boomy pain of course.
Thereisnospoon responded on 14 Dec 2009 at 6:28 pm #
This is indicative every update, though—at least to a degree. Everyone stacks as one class and goes crazy for about a week. When the Engineer update comes out, there will be complaints that players are too busy turtling. And, just like the updates before it, the problem will pass with time. Such is the fate of the Soldier/Demo update. In any case, go Medic for the time being and try to get some of those more aggravating achievements like Medical Breakthrough or, more likely, Blast Assist. Or go Spy and ring up the backstab count. Make the update productive instead of bemoaning it for making TF2 no fun to play.
Speaking of Spy, I’m not quite sure why you give the Ambassador a pass but mock the cloak watches. The Ambassador, for all of its headshot goodness, takes the Spy out of his element which is to rely on his revolver as a means of covering his ass. The Ambassador turns a number of Spies into pests who try to headshot Snipers for achievement purposes. This could be mocked as easily as “oh lol dead ringer more like easy mode.”
That being said, the watches provide a variety of tactics for a Spy based on the map, the game type, the teams, etc. Yes, whenever someone tries to use the Dead Ringer like an idiot or sits around doing nothing of value with the Cloak and Dagger, it’s annoying. But the watches provide options. You still need to worry about stealth even with the Cloak and Dagger as the time to wait for it to recharge sufficiently is time wasted sitting in one spot.
The Spy stuff being mainly an aside, what differentiates this article from the general dismay that surrounds every class update? I don’t think one can make a sound judgment until the update reveals itself in greater detail. Otherwise, you’re left to curse the unknown, and that’s just unproductive and reeks of looking for something to dislike.
saladful responded on 15 Dec 2009 at 3:00 am #
Flame on. *insert metal gesture here*
Seriously, why whine about an update thats not even released yet? And if you have to whine, do it more creative and not the generic HURR DURR DEMOMAN MORE LIKE IMBAMAN DURR stuff. At least, it will bring some new fun to TF2, before it gets stale (and to be quite frank, it does get boring about now. If it wouldn’t be for this update, I wouldn’t probably be playing it for another few weeks/months, for there is much better, much more interesting stuff out). And don’t act, like you’re not going to play as soldier/demoman as soon as the update is out, so stop flaming about class-stacking. It happens every update, and everyone participates, so stop acting all elitist.
Much worse is the announced crafting system. Crafting? Seriously? In an FPS? Or, in an FPS like TF2? What the hell? If I wanted to “craft” I’d play WoW or any RPG for that matter and not TF2. How about implementing a working dropsystem instead of this half-assed crap? This is just a bandaid on a gaping wound, and not even one of the cool bandaids, with rockets on it, no, this one has ponies on it and doesn’t even stick properly.
Okay, that was a bad metaphor.
Anyway, I am done flaming about flaming.
Sandman responded on 15 Dec 2009 at 3:52 am #
I totally disagree with the article when it comes to the spy watches. In fact, it sounds more like somebody who is resistant to change. “The way I’ve done it is the way it’s always been done, and the way it was meant to be, damnit! Now get off my lawn!”
This weekend was euphoric for me as a pyro. You can basically spam airblasts for kills now, and as sorry as it is for that to be true, it’s fun as hell. I’d guesstimate that I had around 100 deflect kills over the past 3 days, without much additional playing time.
As for ways to help out “your side”, don’t underestimate bringing down the opponent’s health so that “your side” can finish them. i.e. heavy, non-headshot sniper, etc.
Sandman responded on 15 Dec 2009 at 3:56 am #

I have to agree with Clank on one point: it makes me jealous to think of so many people stealing my favorite class. Over the summer my soldier hours mushroomed and it became my favorite class. Using any other class was either situational or just for fun. So the soldier (and demoman kinda) occupied special places in my heart…especially because I think of myself as a pretty good soldier when soldier and demo are classes that are easy in principle but hard to master.
And then the update came and I could no longer trust my demomen on my friends list. Plus, you flood a server with soldiers or demos and it does become a spamfest. It’s like a 32 man server with heavies, spies, snipers, and medics but this time it’s with rockets and stickies EVERYWHERE. So it’s with jealousy I tell these whippersnappers to back off from my favorite class. His rocket spewing glory was mine before you came along
tl:dr I still have good plays and k:d ratios as a solly even w/ the current overflow of the two classes but seriously. Back off. His power is mine, MINE I TELL YOU *gets carted off to an asylum*
