Medieval Fortress 2

Do you like Team Fortress 2? Do you like castles? Do you like to see teams fighting entirely using medieval-style weapons? Then THIS is an article for you!

When cp_redfort came up on Server #1 some two or three days ago, the collective mind of the server decided it would be fun to try and play entirely using the huntsman. I sat for a minute and thought about it some more. What did they have in medieval times? Bows and arrows, check. Piss, check. Swords and knives, check. Burning arrows, check. Axes, check. Saws, check. Magic… Check.

I did some fiddling about with the admin controls and, mainly by trial and error, locked the teams down to one medic, one pyro and the rest snipers. We further imposed limits of no needlegun/blutsauger, no shotgun/flaregun, no burning players and no sniper rifle/smg. The razorback was allowed, but was literally pointless, only serving to slow you down. The only rule here I might relent on is the flaregun, but that would require further discussion.

This is an unfortunate side effect of the game (thanks to RJ for the screenshot)

This is an unfortunate side effect of the game

The rules were simple: Tournament mode was in effect, since that was the way I’d imposed class limits, and this meant that one team had to cap more points than the other, or cap the same amount faster. The huntsman was the main ranged weapon, with the kukri, axe and bonesaw for short range. Medics were allowed to heal, ubercharge or kritz, and defend themselves with the bonesaw. Pyros were allowed to light arrows, airblast people and use their axe. Jarate was allowed, resulting in some heated mini-crit-filled combat. We created… something beautiful.

I have approximately 40 minutes of video, consisting of 7 rounds recorded from my point of view. There are some graphics glitches which I apologise for, but they don’t seem to be avoidable. Additionally, due to the limits of the demo system, the tournament mode HUD stuff isn’t shown, so you have to rely on our banter to tell you how long is really left. The first 12 minutes is embedded below, and the remaining 3 videos are just linked to. I’d advise you to watch them fullscreen, since you can then read the text chat.

Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

I’m hoping to do this again, and I’d be happy for anyone to sign up to join us. We’ll get together soon and hijack a server.

    Shame there wasn’t more flaming-arrow usage.

    If you ever do this again, you might try allowing spies to play using only their disguise kit and knife.

    Oh, sweet, I get the first kill on you in that video, Phoenix. :P

    Your spray got owned, Phoenix… XD

  4. Phoenix responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 1:17 am #

    @same3chords
    Yeah, we need to work on that. And that is a good idea, but it was totally impractical for me to regulate that as it was.

    what happens if a player doesnt have the huntsman? >_>

  6. AlphaTM responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 1:41 am #

    Wait, you recorded that awesomeness? Cool.

    For flaming arrows, considering Pyros would be down in the field chopping up people rather than hanging around the balconies of the castle, I thought the Flare Gun could substitute as fire arrows.

    Wow do you suck balls or what

  8. Phoenix responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 2:43 am #

    @Killa-Ewok

    Yeah. I suck at a class I hate playing and have little practice with, using a weapon I’ve only had for a few days.

    I fail to see how this is in any way relevant.

    You should allow spies, but no disguising, revolver or sapper.

    Seeing someone run in with crit axe brings warmth to my heart.

  11. Phoenix responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 2:52 am #

    I dunno, I’d rather have them disguising than cloaking…

  12. Roloki responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 3:51 am #

    You could also allow Heavy w/ Sandvich and fists as an assault unit, albeit limited to 1 per team again.

    I also want to say scout w/ Bonk! and sandman (disable the baseball if possible, only the wooden club counts as medieval). Might be a bit of a stretch, but if you’re allowing the medic in by counting the medigun as “magic”, I posit that Bonk! counts as magic.

    Kidding

    My input: if we’re doing this again, do let any other classes into the game :/ It was already fun, I think that a Heavy running around would break it. IMO.

    Our group at Control Point came up with a very similar game design a while ago, and it’s a ton of fun! Ours is a bit different, though, with all Snipers and one Pyro on each team.

    Oh, here’s a demo of our match, as well. Redfort is amazing for this.

    You should allow Flaregun and Rockets next time.
    I cast: MAGGOT MISSLE!
    Fireball!

    See? And those are both real.

  23. Sarda responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 8:09 am #

    Yeah, I had a fun time during a non-official(read: no server-side class limits) match on CP3. At least, until somebody went heavy. We immediately ganged up on the heavy, but it kept going downhill from there.

    Moral of the story? Make sure somebody’s set limits.

    This is pure awesomness/beauty (choose what u consider is best 2 describe it)

    P.s. OH! And also… it seems that everyone wanted to nail your spray huh?

  25. Kaphei responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 9:05 am #

    Yeah that’s what I mean, but that’s just my opinion :)

  26. DZeroX responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 9:07 am #

    Can you QQ some more, kamikazewave? It’s your own fault for not using a miniature catapult, like I did, instead of a bow & arrows.

    If I can recall correctly, you also cried when I used capsules of concentrated lard to fight your sword.

  27. Phoenix responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 9:19 am #

    I dunno what’s going on here, but… DZeroX, your email address is kamikazewave@CENSORED.com

    Stop trying to create drama, please.

    @Kaphei I agree with you

    @scatterguner Yeap. But she’s MINE.

  29. Sesochan responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 9:26 am #

    Oh man, I wish I was there! Anyway, there could be a day that could be named “Medival day” or something. I would play on that.

    THINGS I THOUGHT WHILE WATCHIN’:

    1. Wouldnt turning invisible and changing appearance count as magic? (witch, lol)
    2. BURN THE WITCH! pyro flamey allowed only 4 spycheck, and as a “burning stick” flavor? (relying on a guy playing by the rules, just honesty)
    3. Don’t feel bad. I fail at huntsman too.
    4. Was airblasting allowed? because I saw a LOT of that.
    5. How to ruin this: allow scouts
    6. failspray
    7. 10:30: you’re a mic spammer, you bad man.
    8. with EXTREME… nevermind. bots would never work.
    9. you kept admin-kickin’ people! hard enough to get people to play that mode.
    That looks like a lot of fun.
