I haven’t sold out, I swear

I don’t get a lot of people talking to me, but these days, people almost always go, “Hey Sheep, what happened to being a career Medic?”

My most common answer is “The Spy Update.”

spy

He backstabbed my heart

.

Truthfully, my friends, I have fallen in love with the dashing French(maybe)man we call “The Spy.” He appeals to my tactical nature, espescially with the Cloak and Dagger. While Medic is not an option due to us having six snipers and three spys on our team, I join the madness, put on my balaclava and suit, and go hunting. While other Spies will jump right into the action, I lurk, invisible on the battlefield, advancing and stopping with my cloak meter, inching ever closer to that dominating Heavy, or that Engie whose name I’ve taken, I watch, I wait, then I strike. Gentlemen, I am a Spy.

But then, something odd happened on the server last night. I was on a team in Redfort with the usual post-update Spy and Sniper count, but the Spy count was low enough so that if I went Spy, I would tip the fragile balance of our team. What few assault classes we had were being deftly cared for by a Medic better than me, so I did something I haven’t done in ages.

I went Soldier, and I LOVED IT.

.soldiershovelspycrit

I just crit. IN MY PANTS.

That Hectic night was my best Soldier playtime in a while. A positive Kill/Death ratio, one domination for most of the game. (I had two for a while, but a very determined dominee wrested it from me.) Top of the scoreboard a few times. I was bouncing Scouts up into the air and getting direct hits on the way down. I rocket jumped behind a siper and killed him with my shovel, and hit a Heavy in the face with a direct crit rocket.

Then we switched the Convoy and things got… strange. It was still fun, though.

So, don’t expect me to be playing Medic all the time any more. I have two new classes now. I need to become a better spy, and I need to see if that night of Soldier competence was a fluke.

However, I’m not in a position to play any Team Fortress 2 right now, (I’m sure anyone on my friends list has heard me whine about it.) Here’s hoping I get a decent laptop for graduating this year and can get back in the fray soon. Who knows, maybe by the time I get back into Team Fortress 2 we’ll have resonably balanced teams.

Until then, I’ll have to survive on Ubercharged DnD sessions and Frank Sinatra.

I do remember the convoy match. I have to agree to the strange part.

    But redfort was short lived.

Hate to be the fag here, but you got some typos you should spellcheck that bitch.

That being said, maybe you should try heavy sometimes. That fat man can really make you feel like a team player.

Heh. You’re going through the exact same process I went through a while ago.

I too, went carrier medic for a long while then when I decided to take other classes I noticed I was good them too.

The thing is, while being a medic you follow good players on varying classes and you learn how to play they’re classes without even noticing. Then when you take that class, you instinctively know how to play it.

Richard, no. Soldier is just piss.

    Traitor!
I will apply to have your licence to practice ‘not medicine’ removed, you had better be a good remover of sentries.

I noticed the other day, the spy sais “prego” when healed. Which, if I’m not mistaking, is Italian for “Thanks”.

SO my guess would perhaps be, the Spy’s Italian.

  7. Stealthy Dirtbag responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 10:23 pm #

@Flaske: Yes, but in meet the spy, he says “Ma petit choux fleur”(sp? I’m not so good at French), which is French, indicating he may be French.

  8. Zorgulon responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 10:48 pm #

Why bother being a ‘career’ anything?

Sure, everyone has a favourite class, but I can’t help feeling that those who devote themselves to any particular class is missing out on a large part of what makes the game interesting for me.

And in an attempt to end the age-old Spy nationality debate, Meet the Spy is more or less conclusive that he is indeed French, judging by his accent, and the music at the end.

  9. Ketsuban responded on 06 Jun 2009 at 11:04 pm #

Zorgulon: I don’t really have a choice but to be a career Medic. I don’t have particularly good coordination or aim, and I’m usually fighting a hundred and fifty milliseconds of lag due to playing on servers in the US.

Medic is the only class where you’re not punished too hard for less-than-fantastic aim. Soldier gets splash damage, but the lag means that ends up impotent a lot of the time. I’ve done okay as Demoman in the past, but I don’t find it as much fun. I’m waiting until I random-drop the Huntsman so I can give the combat Sniper a roll.

He says a bit of French (Merde), Spanish (Amigo), and, according to Flaske, Italian (Prego). Thus, he is British, on the basis that he comes from Western Europe, and the rest is player choice. Kinda like the Pyro’s Gender…

    NO! SHEEPSHIFTER, MY ROLE MODEL!
How can you just stop playing? I’m going to cry! But I totally understand about constantly switching classes, I basically play either Scout or any of the three supports. It’s just what is best for each situation, and what is the most fun for you. Don’t worry about “careers” and all of that garbage, unless you’re trying to join a clan or something.

Wait, Ubercharged D&D? How the hell do I get in on that?

  13. Teris Cartung responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 2:32 am #

Ketsuban, I hate to say it, but if you can’t aim as Soldier due to lag, you’re pretty much screwed on the Huntsman. =P Thing is hard as heck to aim properly, and has a bit of lag of its own just in the lead time you need to give to get the arrow over to the target.

I’m with Alex Wan: How do I get in on that?

  15. Spydra responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 3:36 am #

The Spy is obviously a master impersonator and just acts european (Hes from alaska). Also, if I were to make a decision on whether he is french or italian or what, I’d definitely say french, simply for the fact that he chain smokes cigarettes.

  16. Feralt responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 3:44 am #

Oh, dammit. You’ve got the same three class faves as me.

  17. Positronic responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 4:10 am #

The question of the Spy’s nationality is not even a question… they were clearly going for the stereotypical French, what with the chain smoking of cigarettes, the French used in Meet the Spy (Ma petite chou-fleur), and the stereotypical French accordion love music at the end.

As for his Italian and Spanish phrases… Valve has said in the past that with their characters they are not going for anything genuine, they are meant only to be stereotypical, shoddy representations of what we view those nationalities as.

  18. Killa-Ewok responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 4:37 am #

What stereotype is the Pyro then?

  19. Cupcake, Darn It! responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 4:59 am #

I too am having a reversal of roles. I used to play spy, now i love playing medic, and abusing my right to the kritzkrieg :D

  20. Spydra responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 5:13 am #

The pyro is just a mad man. The scout is genuine boston and the soldier is a typical drill sarg.

    heavy = stereotypicial big russian
    demo = unconvincing scott
    medic = unconvincing german
sniper = unconvincing aussie (obvious brit)
And the engi? Well have you heard him say anything that isn’t stereotypical of a texan?

  21. scattergunner responded on 07 Jun 2009 at 6:03 am #

I love Spy but I suck d other team’s balls when i play at d computer version of tf2 with him, so I tried other classes and saw that I’m an excellent marksman (and I haven’t noticed how easy it is to aim with d mouse until a days ago) so I went 4 sniper.
I’ve also tried every other class in d game, but I must say d only classes I don’t stink THAT bad with are: soldier, sniper, pyro, demoman (MAN I love those stickys!!), Scout and I’m kinda bad at engineer but as with d spy I rule with him in d Xbox…

d reason of my my name being scattergunner is just because I think it sounds cool, not because I like scouts.

@Positronic: d spy doesn’t uses spanish phrases, most of d phrases he says that sound spanish are Italian.

srry if u don’t understand everything I write, I’m mexican.

In the world of espionage I’m sure you pick up many separate languages. Considering those are such commonly know words to the English speaking team he can probably afford to use them, and he just likes the flow of them better. That’s who multilingual people talk.

Believe me, when you hear American-Japanese triplets talk mixing both languages, your head explodes.
