We Exist

There are those of you here who would rather ignore us.  They are those of you here that think we are second-class Team Fortress 2 players.  Maybe we are, but either way, we exist.

We are the Xbox 360 players.

We have been lied to, beaten down, and neglected.  Whereas the PC version of Team Fortress 2 is nearing its 100th update/patch, the Xbox 360 has recieved three minor patches, the last of which was a fix for an earlier one.

Valve has told us our day is coming, but in the latest news update from Valve stated that “all the additional TF2 content we’ve produced has pushed well beyond [the RAM limit.]”

Why does this worry me?  Because it is a physical barrier that may not be surmountable by any means.  Certainly, with the cabal being focused mainly on updating the PC version, the solution may never come, or may not be completed until Valve is “done” updating the PC version.

I am willing to accept this barrier, and realize that, because of it, some content might not ever reach us.  However, certain content could be released to us that would not affect the RAM limit.  Namely, the nineteen new maps and corrections to original weapons and items would not do this.

So far, the Xbox 360 community has shown overwhelming support for this mini-update as soon as possible, even if it were to cost more than $10.

The question is, are you compassionate enough to allow the TF2 cabal enough time to compile this update for us XBox 360 gamers?

If you are, please sign this petition, set up on my own site, that will eventually be sent to Valve.  It does not require an account, so it shouldn’t take more than half a minute.

It would make a big difference to the Xbox community.

Show your nice side and help friends in need.

Wow, that was the fastest article approval I have ever experienced. Thanks a lot for signing, Himmelstoss! That means a bunch when you look at our past dissagreements.

  2. Jesse responded on 27 May 2009 at 12:51 pm #

    Give Valve some time.

They want to keep it free. Or cheap.
That means releasing it all at once, instead of One bit at a time.

  3. n00bie51 responded on 27 May 2009 at 12:53 pm #

99% of petitions on the Internet don’t seem to do anything.

If only Valve released TF2 into its own game separate from The Orange Box, then we wouldn’t be dealing with this issues; didn’t they expect to add a ton of new content for TF2 later in the future when they released it, anyway?

It’s definitely unfortunate. I know because before I started playing on the PC, I was an avid player on the Xbox 360 version for TF2. I eventually moved onto the PC, occasionally spending some bouts of time back on the console. I’d be more than willing to spend money on the new maps myself.

Btw, that’s not the “latest” TF2 update, did you forget to look over the story before it was published?

  4. NealKenneth responded on 27 May 2009 at 12:53 pm #

    @ Jesse:
Valve has had two years, and $10 is a good price for 19 maps and more. I wouldn’t consider it a “bit” either. I somewhat dread the inevitably long download.

  5. n00bie51 responded on 27 May 2009 at 12:55 pm #

Oh, I forgot to add something after my first sentence: 99% of petitions on the Internet don’t seem to do anything. But I’ll sign it anyway.

  6. NealKenneth responded on 27 May 2009 at 12:56 pm #

    @n00bie51:

Glad you signed, because there is 1% of petitions that do work, a statistic that is increased significantly when you consider that the Team Fortress 2 cabal only has ten people.

And that link is to the latest news concerning the Xbox 360, not Team Fortress 2 in general.

  7. Paper Shadow responded on 27 May 2009 at 1:01 pm #

Well, I can’t see how this article could anger people, so I guess that is a plus. I won’t be signing it. I am too sleepy to say why. Nothing related to having 4 Sandmen…

  8. NealKenneth responded on 27 May 2009 at 1:05 pm #

    @Paper Shadow:
I don’t see how this will anger people. I see it as a very reasonable request. Hope you sign tomorrow.

Also, your article about 3 Sandmen is hilarious.

But really, I understand where you’re coming from. Before I got my PC I played TF2 on the PlayStation 3. Be glad you were promised the update.

I suppose I might be signing eventually. (Right now)

  11. NealKenneth responded on 27 May 2009 at 1:31 pm #

Thanks, AlphaTM. Your fake response is pretty similar to the actual response that is happening in the Steam Users forum. Beware.

I put equal time into the 360 version as well as the PC. (TSKofA on live, if anyone wants to add me)

I enjoy the extra content for the PC, but there’s something to be said for actually being a semi decent player that keeps me going back to the 360.

  15. gelugon2105 responded on 27 May 2009 at 2:49 pm #

I would gladly sign that petition, but I am rather new to blogger.com, but I am rather perturbed that petition requires me to input the password to my Gmail account for whatever reason.

I support updates for the Xbox 360 version. However, do know that it is still Valve’s decision to make though. They are likely to have their hands full already with fixing bugs on the PC version.

  16. Ryebread responded on 27 May 2009 at 2:53 pm #

I’d sign, but I play on the PC and I take it that you want the list to reflect the number of people who would buy a TF2 expansion for the XBox 360? At the very least, that’d be a solid number for Valve to mull over. What about two separate lists, one for the 360 owners and the others for PC owners?

Also, I’m interested in hearing why people who own TF2 on the 360 stay on the 360? I’m assuming it’s mostly because buying a PC that can handle the game would be too pricey, but I’m wondering if there’re other reasons too.

  17. gelugon2105 responded on 27 May 2009 at 2:55 pm #

I apologize for the weird-sounding first sentence of my previous comment. Having a pounding headache induces a mild tautological tendency in me.

  19. Ozku responded on 27 May 2009 at 3:07 pm #

I do hope 360 users get their update. It was promised over a year ago anyway. If Valve cannot get new weapons and features to work on 360 due memory limit, they should at least release new maps and fixes.

  20. Sinister Minister responded on 27 May 2009 at 3:13 pm #

I have to smile warmly at the response here. To be honest, I expect a wide assortment of anti-xbox messages, but you all have proved me wrong ten-fold.

  21. Baggie responded on 27 May 2009 at 4:06 pm #

I feel for you guys, truely, but this seems a little pointless. They’re already working on an system for your new unlocks (AKA the one we’re currently suffering), and if I remember correctly they’re overcoming the RAM barrier. So you will get yours, I suspect, when they finish the content for all the classes.
    Good luck!

  22. Mickyan responded on 27 May 2009 at 4:17 pm #

honestly? go back to play gears of wars.

  23. nineteen responded on 27 May 2009 at 4:57 pm #

As condescending as it sounds, I feel sympathy for Xbox TF2 players.

That being said, I admire your dedication to a game type and control style which does not easily lend itself to such a title.

I’ll be signing, because not everyone can play on PC, and the wider the spread quality Valve content gets, the happier more people will be.

  24. Gee-Man responded on 27 May 2009 at 6:01 pm #

Well, I think I may end up signing out of pity than anything else. I too used to be a 360 TF2 player, and for a time being, I was happy. But then it only took one tryout of the PC version a week after the Medic update for me to realize what I had been missing all this time.

I will sign, but keep in mind that Valve is doing their best to make the 360 update as cheap (maybe even free) as possible. Microsoft will probably put up a hard fight to release so much new content for free, but I think it will be worth it if Valve can overcome MS and get it released without payment.

When I played on Xbox, I use to dread the idea of updates ever coming out. Honestly, it still fun because it’s really balance (besides demoman). Trust me I know how you feel because I’ve been playing Xbox TF2 since October 2007.

I play on PC now, but still play on Xbox until the wave of whatever class is over. I’ll sign if this update only includes maps, not weapons.

  30. Kollega responded on 28 May 2009 at 12:08 am #

I have signed a petition, because tons of patches/19 new maps won’t hurt anyone, even if it will cost 10 bucks.

    Power to the people.

I know they exist I just chose to ignore them. Not to say that all Xbox 360 players are bad but many that I have run into and played against are jerks and/or 11 year olds who feel they should be allowed to win cause they are not as old as the other players(ie. teens and college students). And there are kids at my school who are begging me and my brother to fire a flare gun sometime. Its sad and annoying. And not to get picky but tell all your Xbox 360 friends to stop raving about Halo. It was fun in the beginning but has now lost its fun. ciao

anyway, about the petition, i am a PC gamer in heart and soul, and its gonna take a long long time before i pick up a controller. However, i hold no grudges against consoles, i can very easily understand why some (well, alot) people prefer them above the PC, and thus i feel you should deserve the same thing we PC players get. and thats free updates for games.

HOWEVER, i still disagree with paying for it, i feel that console gamers are getting so screwed, for all games that is… its a sad, sad thing indeed

  36. Tesla Tank responded on 28 May 2009 at 6:51 am #

    You got my sign.

Used to play on the 360 myself, with some friends, so I know how much it needs updating. A seperate release would have worked wonders for TF2, and is not completely unimaginable. Portal was re-released on Live, with new content. Why not TF2?

  37. Doctor Decapitation responded on 28 May 2009 at 7:03 am #

What about PS3 users, they could also get some / alot of updates

  38. n00bie51 responded on 28 May 2009 at 7:24 am #

Yeah, Sinister Minister, usually there’s a bunch of crap that’s flown around when it comes to topics like this, but for some reason I didn’t expect NealKenneth here to get any hostility. That is, until Mickyan decided to post.

Although I believe that the PC is the superior platform to play first-person-shooters on and that all of the players should eventually try to get a decent rig and enjoy TF2 on the PC, I started out on the console version and played it for many months and know what they’re dealing with.

Doctor Decapitation, ironically, although there has been great division in the community between those who play on the Xbox 360 and those who play on the PC version of the game, for the most part they seem to agree that the PS3 deserves no support.

  39. Nucl34r responded on 28 May 2009 at 7:25 am #

yeah but valve didn’t make the port to the PS3.. so yeah.. if EA wanted to do it, they could do it, for like 30 bucks or something i recon :P

  40. ExAstris responded on 28 May 2009 at 7:34 am #

    The PS3 deserves no support.

Even if I have three of them :D

However, I feel your pain… the pain I feel whenever they refuse to port 360 games to pc! :D

  41. NealKenneth responded on 28 May 2009 at 7:49 am #

I wish the PS3 players could get the update as well. However, Valve has stated that this will not happen, so I didn’t include them.

  42. Venom King responded on 28 May 2009 at 8:19 am #

    PROTIP:

Valve is trying to update the game, but they still have to figure out how to include everything with the limitations of the xbox, there is too much content, achievements are an example, the ornage box already exeeds the limit or almost.

    tl;dr It’s not Valve’s fault, it’s microsoft.

  43. Sinister Minister responded on 28 May 2009 at 9:24 am #

@noobie51: As far as i’ve heard, Valve outsourced The Orange Box to EA for the PS3 port and didn’t directly develop that port. This is probably why it is unlikely for the PS3 players to ever receive the updates.

  44. Sinister Minister responded on 28 May 2009 at 9:51 am #

Sorry for the double post. I just read through the entire topic on the Steam forums, and the response you got is appalling. I mean, I should have expected it considering it’s the Steam-freaking-Forums, but still. Thankfully that mod came by and closed the topic and gave the idiots infractions.

  46. bertu responded on 28 May 2009 at 10:55 am #

For the 10 bucks you are willing to pay for the mini update you could have bought the PC version on the free weekend deal.

Even if your PC sucks you still can run the game with low res cfgs.

  47. Barry responded on 28 May 2009 at 11:21 am #

yes bertu you can RUN the game but can you play it with most computers? no. its laggy with all the new weapons and maps to the point its just insane to even sit down and try to fiddle around with it to get it working.(which i’ve done extensively btw on my laptop.)

i’ve tried overclocking, i’ve tried software overclocking, i’ve put graphcis and sound on the lowest possible settings with dx 8, i’ve used fps boosting autoexec’s, i’ve done everything. dont even give me that crap about low end pcs being able to play this game. while you techinically can run it, its nowhere near playable. at least give us the patch valve.

  48. NealKenneth responded on 28 May 2009 at 11:23 am #

    @RealKenneth and Sinister Minister

    He’s a troll, that’s all.

  53. NealKenneth responded on 28 May 2009 at 1:13 pm #

    @VenomKing

The actual problem is from the fact that the RAM on the Xbox 360 isn’t able to support the upgraded game. This is only indirectly the fault of Microsoft (for not putting more RAM in the 360 in the first place.)

Rather than wait for an altered version of the game that will be able to run on th Xbox, I am suggesting that we get a “trimmed” version with certain aspects eliminated so that it can run.

Why did you call me RealKenneth, by the way?

  54. Barry responded on 28 May 2009 at 1:45 pm #

this is getting ugly guys. lets stop before this thread derails. if we want to get the dlc on the 360, we need to be talking about other possible alternatives or content that shouldn’t affect ram. something productive would be nice. im all for your idea neal, it sounds great. keep spreading word of this petition.

  55. NealKenneth responded on 28 May 2009 at 1:49 pm #

If you have other suggestions for places I can spread the word, that would be terrific.

I am planning on restarting the thread on the Steam Users forums, and if you guys were there to help keep things smooth (at least initially), we might have an excellent turnout of signatures.

  56. Barry responded on 28 May 2009 at 2:29 pm #

silly as it may seem, try facebook. its really popular and you never know.

  57. bertu responded on 28 May 2009 at 3:02 pm #

True, Barry, my PC is kinda crappy but I still run it fine with specific cfgs, but I can totally see your point.

Still, there is an argument to be made that instead of buying an Xbox you should just invest on your PC more. Obviously not an imediate solution, just something you should keep in mind for your future gaming options. I am more and more convinced that PC gaming is more viable than buying consoles, and this is from a guy who had every Nintendo and PS ever made.

  58. Anonymous responded on 29 May 2009 at 2:42 am #

Thanks for clearing things up for me, Himmelstoss. I signed the petition.

I am a PC TF2 gamer, by the way.

As for why Valve hasn’t done much for the console versions yet, I have put some thought into that and I find that Valve, Microsoft and Sony may have some issues with DRM. It is unlikely Valve cannot make patches for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions – Valve is too skilled not to do that. I believe Valve is hampered with legal wrangling with the two other, more gigantic game publishers.

I don’t think Valve likes glitches and exploits to remain on the other two versions; they will sully Valve’s reputation. Therefore, I think the blame and hate should be directed at the Evil (Western) Empire and the Other (Eastern) Empire instead.
