A Look at TF2’s Soon to Be Used Content; Part 2.5
A quick look at the GCFs again for the 3rd article in my unused content after the recent update involving the backpack brought me this huge nugget of info hidden in tf_english.txt in the Content GCFs. Noticeably involving the “new system” for weapons.

The Backpack hides a few secrets.

Yes, this looks bad.
Also, the reset stats is horrible – it resets HOURS as well as points. That’s terrible. It now says I have zero hours though I should be having 480+.
I don’t think TF2 needs more randomness, to be honest. Hoping to god valve doesn’t fuck this up like they did with the scout update.

kanodin responded on 21 Apr 2009 at 2:07 pm #
I’m honestly quite confused what purpose deleting weapons will serve. even if their are random drops you’d think Valve would have the good sense to keep achievement earned weapons distinct from randomly dropped silly hats or whatever they may be instead of limiting the space of both and forcing you to choose between them.
And further more, why on earth would you release it now when there is no discernible reason for deleting items yet. I know Valve is a fan of being cryptic but this is ludicrious.
In short, it’s new and quite different and therefore frightening. Damn you change, sneaking up on us like this.

All I can say now is hell freaking yes.
BJJ responded on 21 Apr 2009 at 3:01 pm #
You guys are overthinking this.
The attributes are just for defining the different features of an unlock. They’re not customizable or something. Backburner is ‘100% crits from behind’.
I don’t get the point of deleting unlocks, but whatever.
The hats are clientside, so they can be turned off.
The names are placeholders, just like some of the achievement names in the GCF have little relation to the actual things you have to do to get the achievements.
We already know that weapons have levels, but they don’t mean anything anyway.
…and where the hell did you get ‘random drops’ from?
“NoItemsExistLong” ”(NO SPECIAL ITEMS FOR %loadoutclass% EXIST YET.)”
“NoItemsFoundShort” ”(NO ITEMS FOUND YET)”
“NoItemsFoundLong” ”(NO SPECIAL ITEMS FOR %loadoutclass% HAVE BEEN ACQUIRED YET.)”

It just says this already, if you mouse over a class with no unlocks yet.

Dracula Guy responded on 21 Apr 2009 at 9:51 pm #
Here is a little more clarification for you all about some of these. About the whole Primary/Secondary PDA. The engie doesn’t have them in his loadout screen currently. If you look at some of the loadout stats, note they all use variables, instead of using normal numbers; and that variable is exactly the same for each one. Now, note about the headgear, I believe there will be normal headgear, and individual class headgear. Note the ““TF_Unique_Headgear_*” prefix.
Dracula Guy responded on 21 Apr 2009 at 10:07 pm #
Also, the whole “DiscardExplanation” ”You picked up this item but you don’t have room for it in your pack.” “DiscardExplanation2? ”Delete an item below to make room or press discard to throw your new item away.” Seems to pretty much prove the item drop.

And yes it’s me again^ Because when I got to thinking it:
There are also drawbacks on the list of special attributes list. Maybe we’ll get customizable, dynamic weapons? Less damage –> more crits like, or anything else you can come up with… And maybe you’d have to earn the customization points somehow…
Anyway, this seems extremely interesting. My crystal ball says we’ll see in a month. Go Valve! They made this game, they won’t fuck it up, trust me on this one.

Im holding back all judgments till changes arrive (if they do at all). Could be interesting/fun, could go totally wrong. But this has some potential. Only thing i dont seem to get is why would they give us the possibility to delete out unlocks? At least why now?
Von Epp responded on 21 Apr 2009 at 11:54 pm #
My initial reaction is that this will be bad for the team based focus of the game. I can foresee non-team oriented players just running around, not helping with objectives, and grabbing all the unique items before the actually useful teammates can grab them. On the other hand, if you could pick stuff up and run it back to other teammates, this might up the team play element for scouts and spies. For instance, if scouts could run ammo boxes back to engineers, or spies could pilfer good stuff from behind enemy lines and bring it back.
I’m kind of hoping this is just an addition to give people greater control of customizing the game. It’s also possible that this will be specific to a certain game type. But we’ll see how this all gets implemented.

Delort an item, sure, you can never re-earn it again. RE-EARN. But you can pick up somebody else’s dropped one. This stops all this variable stats bullshittery that the mouthbreathers who can’t get their tiny minds around RPGs fear.
As someone with a full complement of unlocks, I’m not sure what kind of inventory space we’ve got lined up, but assuming the current inv screen is something to go by, there’ll be plenty to go round.
So, if you can delete an item, but are allowed to re-collect it again later when you find one.. and there doesn’t seem to be any kind of imposed inventory limit (as yet), what’s the point?
..I have no idea. Go bug Valve.
That being said, there’s always the possibility that they’re further removing the the ties between achievements and unlocks.. you can farm/earn your first 12 achieves for the item, or you can wait til you manage to ’splode some poor fool who already did, and steal his.
tl;dr – Valve aren’t so desperate for attention that they’ll permanently steal your stuff so there’s (more) 13yearolds BAWWWWing on the steam forums about how their LITTL BROTHER GOT ON MAH COMP N DELETED MY ITEMZZ ;_;

Hi.
Mickyan responded on 22 Apr 2009 at 8:47 am #
You’ve been complaining that people farmed achievements to get weapons, now it’s not needed. What are you exactly complaining about?
It’s not like it’s gonna turn out so that the one that got the best equip will win. It’s gonna be like normal unlockable items. Usually better than the normal ones, but with side effects. You wont find a rocket launcher that has a 10 rockets clip and does 300% damage, you can trust me on that.
You won’t be looking for the “best weapon”, you will be looking for the best weapon for you, some will be a little better than others, but team fortress isn’t turning in a “the one that got the best weapon after playing for days wins no matter what” kind of game. Have faith in Valve. Don’t judge untill you’ve actually experienced the whole thing. If it’s gonna unbalance the game I’m sure valve will remove the whole feature. Don’t always be so pessimistic.

Copy+pasted from my post in the thread in the forums about the same topic:
“You know, I’m thinking about it…
Valve must realize that they’re upsetting a crapload of people with this update that seems to hint at radical changes in the near future. Although I would be one of the first to harshly criticize Valve for the decisions and changes they’ve made to TF2, I think they understand the community would be extremely uncomfortable and oppose whatever changes that are speculated (such as TF2 turning into some kind of retarded RPG). In the end, I have some trust in Valve and I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as we’re making it out to be, despite our (quite reasonable) concerns and doubts.
I mean, I’ve criticized unlockable content and I probably won’t be the biggest fan with whatever Valve has in store for us soon, but I have faith in them. This is coming from me, somebody who despises some of the changes they’ve made in this game and will continue to do so for a long time.”

Granted, the compalining before they exist is not as easy to defend, but in all fairness this is a huge chance, and people find even small chances uncomfortable. If anything I would blame Valve for all your woes, releasing this kind of stuff without all the information is going to spark a fire of rage and fear, something Valve should know by now, I’m guessing they just like to watch it burn at this point.

That’s the Valve we all and adore.
Hey, we’re still lovin’ their games right?
I think they’re onto something good if we’re still playing their awesome games.
Hmm..
So I just agreed.
Interesting.

I’m confident it will work out in the end noobie. I can’t say if random drops will be good or not although I can certainly see them being fun if done right. If it’s something else entirely, well that will be interesting to see.
In any even I highly doubt any of the doomsayers will be even close to the mark. And worst case scenario they are right, people hate it, Valve being Valve see this and actually fix it (eventually).

I’m still going to call it like and see it when I see something that’s wrong with the game (and will say that TF2 has PROBLEMS and is FAR from perfect), but I’m just saying, all this fretting about and rampant speculation is somewhat unwarranted and over the top.

@kanodin: I’m not angry about speculation, i’m angry about the “OMG VALVE R STOOPID FOR DOING THIS I DUN WANNA PLAY AN RPG, I’M PLAYING AN FPS WAAHHH” crap. I made the mistake of reading the Steam forum threads that were posted and i’m already sick of seeing the many, many people that are jumping to conclusions and NOT speculating.

My professional opinion as an amateur programmer is that all this evidence Sarda posted makes this matter pretty evident. We ARE getting some kind of random weapon system, AND some kind of drops. There’s nothing connecting the two in there, though (although they sure are likely to be connected). Also, awards. What are they?
To be honest, I’m gonna love this. It’ll be great to further fine tune my weapons towards fitting my play style. (More ammo for me pistol and faster reload for me FaN -_O)
I am heavy weapons guy, and this is my new weapon!
Look forward to this, and don’t be skeptical! It’ll be awesome!
Nicomallo responded on 22 Apr 2009 at 7:23 pm #
Using variables doesn’t have to mean we are getting random weapon stats; vavle are often tweaking the stats of weapons, and probably just find it easier to only have to change the stats in one place rather then have to change every language file by hand.
Jammers responded on 22 Apr 2009 at 8:22 pm #
Actually, I think it’s to make people suddenly become VERY VERY INTERESTED in tf2.
Everybody ever is going to be playing L4D and/or TF2 now since these changes are so amazing.
Btw, could be the new game mode they’ve talked about for a while?
See you guys on the 24/7 mmo_2fort server.
Nicomallo responded on 22 Apr 2009 at 8:36 pm #
I just checked an old version of the gcf, and the variables for weapon stats are still there, so this is nothing new to this update, and probably not a sign of random weapons.

Himmel why do have to be so negative about something you don’t even know about? If you don’t know anything about it yet don’t just jump to conclusions that Valve will release a bad update. Also its just a bunch of stats.

hey n00bie, why don’t you delete all of your unlocks now, since they’re unfair?
n00bie51 responded on 23 Apr 2009 at 5:37 am #
I never said they’re unfair, and by deleting them I would make it even more unfair because everybody else would have unlocks and I wouldn’t. (The only way I would consider it unfair is that the players who’ve been playing TF2 for some time have an advantage over newbies who haven’t unlocked these items.)
However, I guarantee you if I could press some magic button that would remove all unlockables from TF2, everyone and myself included, I would do it.

That is either an obsolete piece of code or a certain class gets throwable weapons, like the pyro, for example, but i doubt it.
Dracula Guy responded on 23 Apr 2009 at 9:10 am #

kanodin responded on 23 Apr 2009 at 11:36 am #
Hmm grenades, I never played TFC though like most of you I’ve heard the horror stories about grenades and why Valve had to remove them.
I Suppose I wouldn’t be against a few of them returning, the real question is who should get them?
Scout: seems like a bad idea to give the speedster an area of effect weapon (hey I just realized, if grenades do return, the whiners can say it’s the equivalent of wizard spells in rpgs, no winning with these people) when crowds and sentries are his main weaknesses.
Soldier: Could work, but how would giving him grenades be any different from just using the rocket launcher?
Pyro: regular grenades could be a mid range alternative, I’d be against incendiary ones that could obsolete the flare gun.
Demoman: what purpose would this serve that pipe bombs and stickies don’t already cover?
Heavy: could be useful for groups, allowing him to do damage to them all rather then obliterate them one by one with the minigun.
Engineer: Tough to say, could help him defend his sentry or make him think he should just abandon it and frag people instead.
Medic: He’s tough enough frankly, giving him another weapon is a bad idea.
Sniper: Largely the same as the engineer, could be a last ditch defense, or make him think he’s the grenadier. I’m against the idea of helping him at all in close range combat.
Spy: Largely the same as the scout, too easy to sneak behind a group and then set off some fireworks, causing all kinds of confusion and death.

TFC was fun, but yes, the carpet bomb of grenade spam was quite excessive and upset the balance of gameplay.
Secret Agent Clank! responded on 23 Apr 2009 at 2:19 pm #
No grenades thank you.
If you must implement them, make it limited, so that you can only throw one every 15 seconds, or only give each person one that has to be refilled. And even then, I still have my doubts.
@Helispoe: Get a gravatar and email set up for it. Makes it so much clearer. XD
Coming Second responded on 23 Apr 2009 at 3:30 pm #
Here is Valve’s thinking, and what is actually going to happen.
A lot of people don’t like the achievements = unlockables thing. That has been made clear by the community. The main difficulty is that it punishes casuals who just want to try out the new toys and don’t see why they have to put in a lot of grinding for sidegrades. There has been quite a lot of achievement hacking, as demonstrated by recent TF2blog entries, and obviously Valve want to find a solution where people don’t feel the need to do this and they don’t feel the need to hand out punishments.
However, Valve don’t want to abandon the idea completely because a) they’re already committed to achievements and b) they want people to keep playing the game over a period of time.
Their solution? When you kill somebody carrying an unlockable, you can pick it up and put it in your backpack, providing you’re willing to part with your old gun. How exactly they’ll manage this concept I don’t know. My guess is that if you DO decide to go with the unlockable, you’re stuck with it for as long as it takes for you to kill somebody carrying your old weapon. When you get the requisite number of achievements, you’ll simply get the option to switch between them freely.
The “+1″ stuff I don’t know for sure about, but I’ll hazard a guess. Now they’ve battened crits all the way down, they’re looking for new ways to give positive feedback to players who do well. So let’s say you kill a bunch of guys and capture a point: waddaya know! Your level 1 Stickie Launcher is now level 2, with an clip of 9 instead of 8. It lasts for as long as you stay alive: the beauty of course being, the guy who had the nouse to kill you has the chance to pick up your powered up weapon. Again, how this will work I’m not sure. In this instance, perhaps if you’re a Demo yourself you can immediately pick it up, and if you’re something else you can stow it in your inventory to use in the next life you decide to roll Demo? Who knows.
Course, I could be completely wrong. Maybe they’re just going to turn it into World of Fortress 2. Shining Rocket Launcher of Justice +7. I’d probably still play it. Exciting times, gentlemen.
