Jening – “Backstabbing Spy”
If you’re a longtime reader, chances are, you’ve already been introduced to Don Newman and Huey Lewis, two top-notch pyros. Now it’s time for a spy to take the stage.
As most of you are aware, the scout update also brought some radical changes to the gameplay of the spy. In particular, the new backstab animation made spies all over the world wonder if Valve never really was on their side.
Unite S Jening has got to be the most dedicated spy in all of TF2; his TF2 stats really speak for themselves. Point is, he, like the rest of us spies, was quite miffed by the changes, so, in true Jening fashion, he wrote a song about it. Presenting: “Backstabbing Spy” by Unite S Jening, live on our very own Ubercharged server, and set to a video of me failing as soldier. Watch in high quality if you have the bandwidth or if you really care about the video itself.

What’s so wrong with the new backstab animation? Before it was completely unintuitive, relying on instead people who learned the perfect “range” for the backstab, instead of the intuitive backstab.
Valve added in cloak recharging using dispensers and ammo boxers, made it so that spys get insta stabs etc. They fixed it so spy is now intuitive. So what if your old strats don’t work? Someone give this bitch a Kleenex and tell her to cry Valve a fucking river.
Valve even increased the backstab range, so a lot of old strats can still be used, like the sidestab. Only now it’s slightly harder, but so what, you regenerate cloak easily, and you can insta stab and sap engies.

kamikaze, I will explain the original problem, and some of why it’s still broken.
Before you could actually stab their back and they would go down if there wasn’t a glitch. period. immediately after this update you could not be moving or you wouldn’t get the animation, couldn’t be too far away yet still within melee range or you wouldn’t get the animation, and couldn’t be even slightly to the side or you wouldn’t get the animation.
After the patch these problems were lessened, not fixed. and yeah facestabs, they still happen, so it didn’t really accomplish much other then to piss off spies, who already had a bloody difficult time of it, and now they couldn’t even really on their trusty knife, so in short shove it ya know-nothing arrogant sod claiming spies had it better off with a broken blade.
Oh also I loved rythie whining over the music in the beginning.

Ya know what else I hate, the lack of an editing option to remove typos, even if it be just a small one like really instead of rely, it bothers me something fierce seeing my mistake and not making it right.

If I must say: I liked it initially. You got yer enemy name/health intel, yer slightly more convincing disguises, yer Spychecking (still not sure if it’s just a glitch of the health thing), and a faster stab. And slowly, the realization that Valve didn’t tell us the whole story dawned on me…

The video was good. The song was amusing. But what I can’t get enough of is that stats page.
700+ hours as spy? 22 kills, 15 backstabs? Longest life of over 21 minutes? I had to look at the page twice to make sure I wasn’t misreading anything.
Maybe that’s fairly good for you career Spies out there, but for me these are mind-boggling.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with his opinion, you have to admit that the song itself is pretty damn awesome.
As someone who never mastered the flickstab, I’m indifferent to the change, but I can see why the serious spies are pissed off.

Oh nice, I remember that. I loved the song, but I have to say…There’s nothing like watching the legend of Himmelstoss play (especially with background music). Backstabbing Spy is second from the bottom. I looked through his blog some more, and there’s actually youtubes of every one of those songs. Not that organized though, you kinda gotta dig, but just look for the big youtube embeds. Hope that helps!

Jening is most awesome spy, and one of my favorite person to play with. Always cordial, even after he completely wrecks a team with his sapping and stabbing.
And a creative singer to boot!
