YAY SNIPER UPDATE! <3

Jim walked outside and said,
“Time to fill cowards with lead,”
A Sniper found Jim’s crown,
And after one swift rifle sound,
Jim laid on the floor dead.

So it seems are friend/enemy the Sniper is the next class up for the update packs. It is even going to compete with the Heavy Weapon’s Guy for largest update. Although we aren’t one hundred percent sure if the art of Jarate will be a weapon or not. Here’s hoping it will. You may disagree that the Sniper should be the next class update, mainly because you doubt the new offensive tactic called “Sniper Rush” will work. With more then 60 hours of the class under my beat, I’m going to talk to you people about how I think I will enjoy the update…

Personally, I think I am one of the only people looking towards the Sniper Update. I’m not looking to endless WCS matches, because I don’t like them. What I am looking forward to is how the update will change how to class will be played. I’m not what you would call a normal Sniper. I’m the kind of Sniper who, when he sees an enemy Sniper, he finds some way behind them, score a headshot from a meter away, and then taunt for their deathcam.

Clearly, my many hours of Spying may be the cause of this, but it is so fun to imagine the enemies reaction when they find out that they have been killed by a Sniper standing right behind them. For this reason, one of my favourite maps to snipe on is ctf_vikings_final, because it is so easy to get behind the enemy, and, since the map is so open, there are so many Snipers to annoy.

Hopefully, the update will be for Snipers like us. The ones who don’t understand that the Sniper has to stand perfectly still, and stay in a location until death. Remember, we (The Ubercharged Community) keep going on and on about how the Sniper is a lone wolf class. Spies can also be counted as lone wolf classes, but they get rid of Sentry nests, right? Well, so can Snipers. Sentries in open spaces (e.g. Most of Hydro) can easily be taken down by a single Sniper. One headshot to deal with the Engie, a couple of shots to deal the Sentry, and an easy cap.

The Sniper is a unfortunate class. People who play him is often thought to be related to the Counter-Strike player stereotype. This isn’t always the case. A Sniper isn’t a solo class, he is a support class. That means he supports people. The fact that he has a scope doesn’t mean he has to stay away from the fray. Take a match I had on arena_badlands for example. I took down a Heavy (*cough* Black Watch *cough*), a Medic, and a Scout while they were capping the point by sniping afar and the rest of my team was dead, them being my only kills of the round. The next round, however, I went with my team, and killed the same Heavy and got First Blood (I think there might be a achievement for getting First Blood), then killed his Medic with a crit Kukri. The only kill the BLUs did that round was from the Medic, who went on a killing spree after his buddy died.

By staying back, I helped my team out of a bad situation. By helping my team, I stopped the situation from happening in the first place. Of course, how you play Sniper is your own way. But hanging back may not be helpful for your team. If you can both play Sniper the way you like and help your team, then maybe, just maybe, you can be as badass as me…

Oh wait, this article was going to be about what I thought of the Sniper update. Damn…

I feel it’ll be a good chance for me to ‘learn to spy’.
I can be a half decent sniper at times.
But I take the class rushes as a chance to expand on classes I don’t usually play and do my achievement whoring later, after the update buzz dies down.

I’m also excited about the Sniper update, although I’m not so thrilled about the most-likely-to-come n00b Sniper overpopulation. I will son get mah mitts on a copy of TF2 (I’m working to gather some cash, I shall soon succeed!), and the idea of ever making the mistake of stepping out of my spawn and getting 40 Sniper bullets lodged onto my soft, warm flesh is kinda unsettling.

Drat, I wanted to play Sniper so much. Now the CSS-addict stereotype is gonna haunt me even more than before…

Also, 2Fort will be TOTALLY out of the question. I’m not even gonna think about playing there. So much WCS’s are sure gonna make me go beyond my ragequit quota.

    Pyros, Spies and Scouts…
    Tonight, we will have fun.

    Endless.
    Bloody.
    Fun.

I am looking forward to this quiiiiiiiiiite a lot, might I say.

I am going to be sorely disappointed in myself if I don’t manage to break my record for backstabs.
Unless, of course, they give the sniper an anti-spy weapon like they have for every. Single. Class pack. Then I will blame Valve for making me add ‘night-vision snipers’ or something stupid like that to my list of spy grievances.*

*It’ll be somewhere between crit wrenches and that one Scout who always knows exactly when and where you’re going to decloak.

    60 Hours? Pshh.

    Try 99.

I don’t care about the update. I don’t care about the achievements, I don’t care about the weapons, I don’t care about the gamemodes or maps. Okay maybe the possible new game mode, but that’s besides th point.

I just want the Meet the Sniper theme. <3

99? Pssh, try 130 :) I am actually not looking forward to the sniper update though. The class is so fundamentally simple that I don’t like the idea of changing it. I like how a sniper vs sniper battle is based purely on skill, I don’t like the idea that one sniper may get a bigger scope or something that upsets the sniper on sniper action.

  12. Tim responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 1:33 pm #

Are they honestly trying to kill the Heavy? Hes almost extinct.

  13. Sarda responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 1:39 pm #

    @Azul
You want battles based purely on skill, you go to CS:S. You want battles based mostly on skill with some luck and strategy thrown in, stay here with us.

I’m looking forward to new weapons for the sniper certainly, however this will be the first class pack where I won’t even try to get them till the fervor to play as it dies down.

It’s obvious no matter how good you are another sniper will get ya with so many, and I can expect massive rushes by the enemy to any remotely good spot, and the simple fact that a team of snipers isn’t really useful.

I often sneak up behind WCS as a sniper as well, but I prefer kukri’ng them to a headshot.

  15. Boris responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 2:10 pm #

130?? Pshh, try 45 minutes :D but i do look forward to the update because it makes me want to try and get the new weps, meaning i’ll play him more, but also it means i can practicing spying :D bstab record… here i come lol (i hope lol) the sad thing is that 45 minutes isn’t my least played character :( my highest is 30 hours on the heavy, and i’m not looking forward to the sniper update for the heavys… CRY SOM… ARRGH!

    [in aussie accent]… Boom! Headshot…

    ugh lol

  18. Kollega responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 4:30 pm #

Well, there’s already critrawkets, sticky bombs, sentries, headshots, backstabs, that fucking Sandman, and now air is going to be filled with sniper BOOLETS? The Heavy has so many counters, and with all this Sniper spam,he’s going to be UTTERLY USELESS.

Sadly, the Heavy’s only use right now is distraction/meat shield. And it seems that Valve is trying to make playing as him even more frustrating, difficult, and practically useless for his team.

  19. Kollega responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 4:36 pm #

And oh,JARATE is probably going to be Sniper’s anti-spy weapon. Even if Spy cloaks, urine will give away his location :D

Sniper update? Excellent…I’ll be spending much more time on 2fort now. As a Spy, mind. All those CSS-wannabees to kill…

You know they mentioned “another update in the works that should be done before the Sniper, and that one will include some new content for all classes.” That’s gonna be interesting. New weapons (but then they’d have to do their unlocks all over again)? Customisable features? Ohhh, the possibilities…

That was quite a nice story, Paper Shadow. I think at some point I was one of your victims.

    Also, hi Clank.

  25. Headwoünd responded on 04 Apr 2009 at 8:31 pm #

Hey, that’ll save the mappers time to build an achievement map! All the Snoipahs are going to need is 2Fort! ;|

This class update will go right over my head. Scopes are my Kryptonite – neither can I use them, nor avoid them effectively. -_-’

  30. Coming Second responded on 05 Apr 2009 at 12:54 am #

Remember Spooner’s advice, guys. There’s going to be a moderate number of Snipers and an arseload of pidunk Spies looking for some easy kills. Myself? I think this update will be an excellent time to rack up some Scout achievements.

Oh, and hey Valve? Do you think you could decrease the power of the bodyshot during the update? So, y’know, I stop dying at full health as a Medic to some unbelievable scrub on the other side of the map who couldn’t be bothered aiming at my head? Seems like a good time to do it.

  37. gelugon2105 responded on 06 Apr 2009 at 7:25 pm #

The Jarate is quite likely an April Fool’s joke. Valve would not put something like that in a “T”-rated game, and this “weapon” is rather uncharacteristic for the Sniper. That jar of piss is nothing but a hoax.

  38. gelugon2105 responded on 06 Apr 2009 at 7:27 pm #

This April Fool’s post on the Jarate even mixed up the silhouette of New Zealand with Australia’s.

  39. Coming Second responded on 07 Apr 2009 at 2:04 am #

    @ gelugon: serious, serious facepalm.

  40. This is not my real name responded on 07 Apr 2009 at 4:06 am #

Yeah, l am an offensive sniper too, l like scoping just a second before the enemy (preferrably a pyro) kills you and score a very satisfying headshot on him.
And let’s not talk about Hshotting scouts..
Hanging back may help in some situations, but offensive snipers are usually more skilled and have more fun that WCS.

    OH LAWDY.
The aura of noobism will be palpable. Legions of retarded snipers make their appearance, legions of retarded spies aiming for the retarded snipers, pyro spam to deal with spies, scout spam to deal with pyros and snipers, and the poor neglected heavy gets forced to spend those long weeks sitting in the spawn eating. Engies and medics, two of my favorites, will get decimated (long range is MURDER for sentries, and every other guy uses a one-hit-kill weapon, rendering even overheals impotent). All in all, I’ll spend the spamming weeks as a demo or soldier, the only classes that won’t be spammed and have any chance of surviving. Hell, even soldier is risky.
