SOLDIER SUCKS LOL

Before I begin, just let me start by saying this: DANGER, DANGER WILL ROBINSON! “CRY-SOME-MORE” LEVELS DANGEROUSLY HIGH! What I say here is my opinion and my opinion alone. It’s not wrong or right, it’s one player’s gripes. Remember that.

Now that that’s over, let me continue on with my undoubtedly controversial rant.

I really, really dislike Soldiers.

No, dislike isn’t strong enough. Passionately despise would be slightly more accurate, but words could never describe how much I hate that class. Every solitary facet of the Soldier fills me with a deep smouldering rage. I hate being juggled by ultra-damaging rockets. I hate being gibbed, punctured, and slashed by the frequent cirts brought on by the constant splash damage done by rockets. I hate how the Soldier has only the second highest health, but never seems to die when I need him to. I hate how the Steam stats claim the Soldier is only the fourth most frequently played class, yet it seems every corner I turn, there’s one standing there ready and willing to blow me into chunky noodle soup. I hate how I’m always dominated by them, but can barely play as them. But most of all, I. Hate. The. Soldier.

I’m going to let that sit in for a second.

Back with me again? Good. Bear with me now for a bit, this is where it gets tricky.

I’m not suggesting we do anything about it.

“But why?” you may ask through a mouth stuffed full of some sort of greasy, cheese encrusted snack. “Why then have you come here to complain? Why do you present complaints but no solutions? Are you not interested in the betterment of the game?!”

Dearest readers, I come here simply to present my opinion. I suggest that Team Fortress 2 is not only the gut-grabbinest, gut-rippenest, strangle-you-with-your-own-grabbed-gutsiest battle thriller ever seared onto my monitor (as the game’s website so accurately puts it), but it is essentially perfect. I believe the only patches that are ever really needed are exploit and bug fixes. Nerfs and upgrades are almost never necessary, with examples being the Pyro’s airblast as a necessary, and the Backburner’s 50 extra health being removed being unnecessary (but that’s another issue entirely, and perhaps I’ll discuss it at a later date).

Instead of blaming the game as being unbalanced or unfair, I instead blame my own lack of skill. I am by no accounts a poor player, as many of my friends may begrudgingly admit. However, one of my main faults is my near-complete inability to fight Soldiers. Is this the fault of the game mechanics? No. Is this the fault of The Valve? Nope. It is my fault and my fault alone for being unable to fight that single class. Besides, who am I to ruin someone’s favourite class? The Demoman is this close to being crippled with all the requests for nerfs from the endlessly whiny community, why endanger yet another class?

And so dear readers, I put this forward to you: the next time you beg for nerfs, reconsider. Perhaps, instead of changing the game to pander to your needs and wants, instead try to play around that part of the game, and eventually you’ll find a counter for whatever tactic you may be challenged with. All it takes is patience.

And so, I leave you with one last thing for you to remember next time you’re frustrated with the game:

LEETLE LEETLE MAN

I still hate the Soldier, though.

The Soldier is not an overpowered class, and i don’t really understand the hype about the Sandman. No medic EVER rushes alone with an Uber and the only circumstance is Arena. Scouts are also okay at one on one, but never really are able to reach that level, due to low health and easy death. Most shots with a sandman happen behind enemy lines, so if a scout hits you, just yell for help, as you will usually be with teammates that can fend you off from the running Scout. All in all, Valve is trying to make sense on paper with each update, and each weapon relies on pure skill and cooperation.

You forgot how the Soldier always crits against you, but never when you’re playing as one.

Or how whenever someone shoots at you, it’s always right at your feet. And when you shoots at them, your rockets never do any splash damage.

I mean, I don’t agree that TF2 is perfect outside of exploits and bugs. I think significant issues exist within balance and that they should be addressed through gameplay changes, nerfs, buffs, whatever. Although I respect the fact you don’t think changes should be made despite your resentment and ability to fight against Soldiers, that isn’t the same as debating over why some items such as the Blutsauger or the K.G.B. are imbalanced.

  13. BJ Blazkowicz responded on 12 Mar 2009 at 4:27 pm #

You’ve probably developed a hatred for the Soldier because you play a lot of Pyro. Both classes are masters of close-quarters combat, but a skilled soldier can effectively destroy a Pyro’s range by juggling him, as opposed to a reflection, which is slower than the rate of fire of the rocket launcher and requires tricky timing. Basically, the excellently designed skill curve for the Soldier rewards skilled players for their effort, as opposed to forcing them to die a long, painful, crispy death.

  14. Kollega responded on 12 Mar 2009 at 4:35 pm #

If you want to fight Soldiers, then you can use Scout/Pyro/Sniper – i think they’re good for that. Problem is,there’s no wide, open spaces acsessable from many directions on many maps, especially two most played maps,so Scouts and Snipers lose most of their effectiveness. In my opinion, most imbalances come not from weapons/classes,but from the maps.

In mining tunnels of Dustbowl and Goldrush,Scouts was drastically underpowered before the update, and with the update,Scout was powered up too much. He was an annoyance, now he’s an intolerable annoyance. Same with Demomen – those tunnels and indoor areas is perfect for them.

In short,PEOPLE,FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY,STOP PLAYING DUSTBOWL AND GOLDRUSH! Go to Gravelpit,Well,Badwater Basin,or something.

If there is a single class which I suffer most to, it would be that flame-wielding monster of a (wo)man(?) we know simply as the Pyro.

In the thick of the blood of my foes, I may be able to seemingly sense Spies and Snipers with the kind of psychic prowess that an Ubermensch is likely to possess, but when it comes to our fiery friend, it seems that whatever so may be in his retardant suit happens to block whatever form of telepathy I utilize to avoid danger. ( Maybe it’s the asbestos? I’m not quite sure. )

I fall for Pyros more often than I should, but to be honest, it’s never done anything to deter me… well, “annoy” would be a more accurate term, but isn’t that a condition common amongst us all? I’ve finally made the switch from my faithful Syringe Gun to that soulless bloodsucker, the Blutsauger, and have picked up the Soldier as my go-to class for when I feel like taking out all the wasted Ubers and half-filled meters those malicious mutes may have robbed from me in a night of play.

I hate soldiers just because I play offensive engineer a lot, and sometimes, if their lucky or skilled or whatever, they can take down my sentry AND me whereas not so for a heavy (wind-up time). Now that I think about it… soldiers are pretty hard to kill… Scout… weak health… pyro… stupid W+M1=free kill, demo, most people can’t aim nades, heavy, run or stab or snipe, engineer, demoman powns, medic… you gotta be kidding… sniper, just play spy, and for a spy, just play pyro. But a soldier has no really glaring weakness, which is probably actually its best point–its just so balanced.

  38. Dark Master responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 2:52 am #

Warning, essay incoming: The importance of buffs and nerfs in TF2, if you don’t want to read all my arguments, all you need to read are the first two paragraphs and the last one.

An interesting read, but I disagree that the game is perfect in every way, nerfs and buffs are important to keeping the game fun for everyone. Each class has its own advantages and disadvantages, and saying that no balancing between the classes is necessary can’t be right if balance issues can cause some classes become pointless to play, or cause some classes to become all purpose that can deal with any situation. While weaknesses are important to Team Fortress 2, it is still possible to the underdog to come out on top. This challenge makes it fun for all parties, and so that a player doesn’t just suicide when the come across one of their weaknesses.

The main reason that so many people are mad at the Sandman is because it goes against this system. The victim can’t do anything, they may as well suicide so that they respawn faster. When this system becomes unbalanced, players lose the incentive to play the vulnerable classes and just go to the ones that are inherently stronger then the other classes, since there is no reason not to.

While the soldier doesn’t have any classes he is inherently vulnerable to (aside from the sniper) he doesn’t really have a huge advantage over any class either (except the medic). This is because many of his targets have weapons that can give them the edge depending on the situation. Most other classes have much clearer strength and weakness classes. For example, in most situations, a scout can’t beat an engineer. However, he does have a weapon and the capability to deal with a sentry if he is presented with an ungarded one in the right place. Of course, the engineer still has the chance to stop the scout from taking the sentry down.

I think there are three reasons for the Sandman hate; first, a skilled scout usually did have the edge in most one-on-one battles before the update, but his victim always had the chance to turn the tables. After the update, if the victim is bonked with the ball, the scout has almost essentially won, the best thing the victim may be able to do is suicide so that they respawn faster, and maybe won’t be hit with the ball next time. The second problem is that it adds another perfect counter to the Heavy, who already has several, he didn’t need an essential nerf. Finally, teamwork is no longer necessary to seriously hamper the effectiveness of an Uber, the strongest weapon of the game.

Class advantage and weakness is the reason why teamwork is so important in Team Fortress 2, if this becomes unbalanced, classes become useless in most situations, or a few classes become the default team, because they can get the job done much more effectively then any other group. If there is any serious balance issue, the class that has the advantage becomes the default, or most often played class, with its vulnerabilitys obsolete, and its weaknesses pointless to play as. This would destroy the class system of Team Fortress 2 and run its team based gameplay.

In the end, saying that no buffs or nerfs need to be done at all, is completely wrong. However, this doesn’t mean that people need to whine about it constantly, nor does it mean that you should be hateful to the whiners. Does the Sandman need to be tweaked? That’s for Valve to decide, but saying that no nerfs or buffs need to be done is ludicrous. Of course, you do realize that Valve uses the user base to do most of its balance testing right? The testing they do before releasing the patches/updates are mainly for resolving technical issues and getting the weapons working the way they want them to.

So I’m not the only one who thinks the soldier is completly over-rated, how can people just assume that the soldier is ‘one of your favourite classes’ it’s sickening!

  44. Secret Agent Clank! responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 5:37 am #

Sniper isn’t a newbie class, no. It certainly takes skill to shoot properly. The reason it could be thought as such because that’s the class most people would pick up when they first come in. Easiest to understand; nothing really to learn besides M2 to scope, M1 to shoot. This being people new to TF2 from CS or whatever.

Pyro’s much simpler to do, honestly, as are Engineers, but I won’t start bashing because new Pyro’s… in fact, new anythings are easy to deal with. It’s just that new Pyro’s are usually suicidal and therefore, much more annoying. “You know I’m gonna kill you. Must you STILL try to set me on fire? I don’t wanna have to walk back to a medkit” XD

    Good read, Dark Master.

  47. n00bie51 responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 7:53 am #

I applaud Dark Master’s excellent rebuttal. sQUEAKY, it’s not CharlesMan’s or my own “inability” to deal with them that’s the problem. What precedes that is the fact we shouldn’t even have to deal with them. Having difficulty against a certain class is NOTHING like not being able to adjust your gameplay according to unlockable content.

For example, let’s say I have a problem with Demo Men and that they’re extremely difficult for me to kill and I always find them dominating me. Like you, I wouldn’t complain about Demo Men being over powered because it’s simply my own lack of skill and inability to deal with them. (Actually, I might, depending on whether or not how obnoxiously they’re spamming those stickies, but for the sake of this argument let’s say I wouldn’t.) However, I wouldn’t consider that synonymous with the issue of not being able to deal with imbalance within the game. I don’t have a problem dealing with Über Saws or K.G.B., but I still believe they’re imbalanced and negatively affect the game by being outright replacements to the default weapons.

  48. Big Boss (Sean Connery) responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:04 am #

@n00bie51: I can understand why you call Ubersaw and KGB imbalanced, but in my experience with them, they’re not. The slow attack speed has killed me on more than one occasion, and I dislike the KGB outright (I use the fists). The Ubersaw filling up the ubermeter, now that I can understand being a problem, but I almost never see Medics meleeing opponents.

Now for a quick Sandman opinion. I very much hate the Sandman; it turns the Scout into an ambush class. If you don’t see the Scout hit the ball at you, you’re pretty much dead. I remember someone saying that the Sandman itself should stun people instead of the ball, and that they should cut the stun time in half. I say… that’s an excellent way of reworking the Sandman.

  49. Big Boss (Sean Connery) responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:05 am #

Oh, and about the Soldier: He’s a good class, around my least to middle played, but he’s too slow. Makes sense since he’s lugging that Rocket Launcher around everywhere, but it just ruins the class for me. It’s why I play Scout, Pyro, and Sniper.

  50. The Real Sean Connery responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:16 am #

how about you lead by example, and stop whining about the whiners, ya weiner.

  51. n00bie51 responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:26 am #

Big Boss, the only circumstance where I think the fists would perform better than the K.G.B. is in one-on-one confrontations when there’s no need for the Critical Hit bonuses as there are no other opponents around. Those five seconds of Critical Hits are better to have than the slightly faster swinging speed of the fists.

And really, you don’t see Medics meleeing players that often? What servers do YOU play on? Have you never seen Über chains (not saying they’re unstoppable juggernauts, most of the time they’re just annoying and ineffective)? Battles have been won and lost because a Medic was able to catch an enemy off guard or kill a Spy with his Über Saw, filling the ÜberCharge meter and subsequently being able to significantly change the results of the game. It is much superior to the Bone Saw — the only circumstance that would make it undesirable to wield is as I mentioned earlier with the K.G.B. versus the fists, the Bone Saw has a faster swinging speed and is more ideal for one-on-one encounters where the ability to build up an ÜberCharge wouldn’t mean anything.

  52. Big Boss (You other Sean Connerys aren't as awesome as I am) responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:44 am #

I dunno, I just can’t stand the KGB. They’re bigger than the fists so my view is blocked a lot (I don’t like having my mouse sensitivity too high because I’m twitchy), and it’s too slow for my tastes. I guess my years of playing the old 2-D Sonic games have rubbed off on me – I can’t stand slow characters (although I do love playing Heavy).

Surprising as it sounds, I almost never see Medics melee on the servers I play on, and even more surprising, when they do they normally use the Bonesaw. Sometimes public server players will join the server I play on and they’ll go Medic with Ubersaw out, hacking away, and at least two people gang up on the guy and destroy him. The same goes for me; I prefer the Blutsauger for confrontation because it restores health.

  53. n00bie51 responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:53 am #

Seriously? The default Bone Saw is such a rarity to me I suspect whoever using them to be a newb (or a noob) who hasn’t unlocked all the content yet or they’re hardcore players who are using the Bone Saw just because they like it. I’ve played with many Medics who WILL go for the melee whenever they can, spotting a Spy amidst our ranks or an enemy Sniper not paying attention to his back, and unfortunately, I’ve come across TOO many Medics who are willing to ignore me and try to kill enemies while I go down in a hail of gun fire, rockets and flames.

  54. Big Boss (You other Sean Connerys aren't as awesome as I am) responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 8:58 am #

Dead serious. Mostly they fill up normally, as both the RED and BLU bases get lots of gunfire from the opposing sides, so they can just stay in the corner while the Heavy tries to root the other team out. And whenever they do fight, they normally use the Blutsauger due to the fact that they need range to hit the enemies. Occasionally a Medic will melee an enemy, but most of the time they get killed before they try it. That’s probably the reason why the Medics don’t melee.

  55. Dark Drake responded on 13 Mar 2009 at 10:48 am #

Soldier is my least played class. its too slow, reloading the rockets takes forever, and there’s no benefit or interesting quirk. Soldier is a representation of the typical multiplayer FPS out there. And yet the soldier is the class that has caused me to steam more than any other class. even w+m1’s and mic-spammers are less annoying than waiting 20 seconds to respawn only to walk out of the resupply and get hit by a friggin KRIT RAWKET from an invading soldier.

If you get killed right outside your spawn:

Either you respawned right as Humiliation occurred and you didn’t notice, or people are spawn-camping. Either way, I can understand the frustration.

If you get killed by splash damage or a random crit rocket:

Rockets are hard to aim to get a good shot. If you get hit by the splash, then that’s a good thing to the Soldier. Most shoot at the ground because the rockets travel so slowly. As for the random crits, again, they’re hard to aim right. Of course, if you walk outside your spawn only to be greeted by a crit rocket, try seeing if you can take another path out.

If you get killed by a very skilled player:

This is normally what happens in TF2 (well… duh.) You’re going to meet up with talented players a lot. If you want to get better, try watching “How to Play” videos, or make friends with good players and ask them for training or something.

If you get killed by a Sticky Trap:

The only good advice for this is “be more careful”, but I’ll just say that you’ll remember to look next time.

If someone start whining after getting killed:

This is normally the sign of a young player (unless, of course, it is a generic Internet user) who doesn’t have a clue what they’re doing. If they start whining over the text, try and figure out a way to get him kicked or muted. If they whine through a mic, try and get the player kicked or banned.

Damn. That was a long post.

So, sQUEAKY, are you saying it takes more skill to use a flame thrower at close range than a rocket launcher? The flame thrower doesn’t need to reload and shoots flame at a fast rate, and the rocket launcher, while quite powerful, actually requires you to aim. You can get away with relying on splash damage, especially with Critical Hits, but there’s more room for improvement when it comes to aiming because skilled players get rewarded for direct hits and air shots.

It was an o.k. article, but you’re getting way too pissy over the few people who don’t agree. Not a single reply you have made is without sarcasm. It’s very childish, and rather annoying in my opinion. Think of logical arguments, and word them in an intelligent manner.

Quite frankly, I’d be surprised if you’re published again.

I’m not going to get into an argument with you, n00bie.

Underscore Jones, I don’t take things seriously. That’s just the way I am. I’ve only responded sarcastically to the posts I find juvenile or without merit.

sQUEAKY, I would expect you to be mature enough to use the word “argument” without any negative connotations — it appears that you’re associating hostility with arguing, but we’re not fighting. We’re debating.

So Squeaky, my essay was thus neither juvenile nor without merit. Is that why you haven’t said anything about it? Or is it just too long for you to read it?

  72. sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT responded on 14 Mar 2009 at 11:39 am #

n00bie: You’re right. I misused the word. Let me rephrase my previous statement: I’m tired of discussing this with you, I don’t think I’ll continue with it.

Dark Master: It’s not mandatory to reply to every post.

Yeah, but obviously it doesn’t help your credibility if you ignore them and yet respond to others. If you don’t feel like engaging in the debate anymore, that’s fine with me — we’re just letting you know we strongly disagree with your article because we feel we have legitimate reasons.

When is charging your uber/kritz NOT a benefit? oO

The Axtinguisher/Fireaxe is probably the most balanced melee alternatives if you ask me, though that’s not saying too much.

  75. Nessmk2 responded on 14 Mar 2009 at 6:54 pm #

The thing that keeps the ubersaw in check is the fact that using it means you have to be close to an enemy and live through the fight to see any use from it. It’s really a double-or-nothing with your uber. If you finish the guy off after a hit or two, you got some uber back. If you didn’t… you’re dead and have no uber, and your team is down a medic for a respawn cycle.
Unlike the Axtinguisher, the US is only useful if you live to see the end of the fight, or at least long enough to pull out your medigun and uber someone near you, and that’s pretty hard in the middle of a heated battle.

  76. n00bie51 responded on 14 Mar 2009 at 11:52 pm #

Yeah, but the fact of the matter is, you’re usually better off with the Über Saw than without it. If you don’t live to build up the rest of that meter, oh well, but if you do, that could turn the tides. ÜberCharges can make or break games.

  77. n00bie51 responded on 15 Mar 2009 at 1:11 pm #

Okay, Big Boss, SERIOUSLY, we must be playing two different games because whenever I play I see Medics use their Über Saw ad nauseum. I use the Über Saw, too, when I play Medic, against Spies, flanking enemies that aren’t paying attention to me, Snipers preoccupied with their sights elsewhere, etc.

I’m not saying many Medics will foolishly rush towards the front lines with the melee weapons out, but my experiences just from a few matches show that those who play Medic use their saws quite frequently.
