Flareblasting 2!

I’m here to bring you yet another skilled pyro, and it’s not Newman this time. This is Huey Lewis, an example of somebody who removes the idea of the W+M1 pyro and uses all the of the Pyro’s tools to effectively take out enemies. Make this in HD of course, it’s worth it.

Let the epic battle of Newman versus Lewis someday come.

I should use my Airblast more, rather then just when fighting Soldiers, Stickies, and people on point E of Steel…

I gotta play more Pyro. I gotta uber more Pyros as well.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but what is W+M1?

  4. Rigel responded on 19 Feb 2009 at 10:09 pm #

THAT is how you play pyro, not that mindless kamikaze backburner spray-and-pray crap i see on every server.

  5. Crazy Dutch Bastard responded on 19 Feb 2009 at 10:09 pm #

W is the standard button for moving forward and M1 is the first mouse button ie the fire button. The W+M1 pyro is a pyro that just runs forward spamming his flamethrower.

I gotta play more pyro too. And not use the backburner. I’ve seen the light I guess…

  6. Rigel responded on 19 Feb 2009 at 10:12 pm #

@GrgoljBlaster: It means what i said in my post above.
W is the key for forward, M1 means Mouse 1 (Attack).
Most players just rush in firing the flamethrower and hoping someone will die. :)

Very nicely done, Mr. Lewis. I’m getting close to this level of skill, but my flare aiming and compression timing are still quite off…

As much as I love our arsonist friend, I do wish she (or he, if you’re unimaginative) would have a shortened range of flamethrower while running forward. I think only a few units will do, or at least slow him down juuuuuuuuuuust a little.

While the backburner is undeniably brilliant at ambush and flanking playstyles (you know, the right Pyro playstyle), there is no argument over this iron fact…
    The compression blast KICKS ASS.

Oh yes, the most impressive maneuver for non-W+M1 Pyros these days is the BBQ; Burn, Blast and Qut (yeah, I know it’s spelt wrong but the acronym to too cool). Burn the enemy with the flamethrower or flare gun, compression blast them into the air, then axtinguish them on the way down. That means you need Flamethrower, Flare Gun and Axtinguisher.
    My favorite loadout, coincidentally. :P

  8. Beartato responded on 19 Feb 2009 at 10:37 pm #

I usually miss air blast against soldiers, but watching this video gave me an idea: when bursting flames, you can see the range of the air blast, so when a rocket touches your flame, you can air blast it more easily. I’ll try this later

  9. jibbi responded on 19 Feb 2009 at 10:58 pm #

never thought about blasting them into the air before i massacre them with my axtinguisher. but still, i dont play differently than this pyro. light them up and finish `em with ma axe!
playing pyro is pure fun! :)

Wow, This guy’s amazing. That last deflect was the most incredible thing I ever saw in tf O__O

I like the BBQ maneuvers going on here, but this guy doesn’t impress me as much as Don (At least before he started using the flames again.)

    The last frag is awesome.

Man that’s some nice skills !

  15. GusChiggins responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 3:26 am #

I can certainly understand the fascination with a pyro that actually uses some kind of skill, as it is a huge rarity in tf2. One thing I realized early on in the game is that if I am having a bad round, I can just go pyro and feel better about myself.

That being said, this guy has some amazing timing and skill. The only thing missing from this video was him killing an enemy pyro with a reflected airblast :D .

  16. Wyatt responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 3:51 am #

Hehe, I never really thought about using airblast to set up the ax, I will now. And yes, really good aim there Lewis.

  17. Secret Agent Clank! responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 6:04 am #

I am different from you all! I have only just discovered the joys of the backburner! XD
Before that, I was always a deflection guy.

Good notes to take, though; blast, then axe.

    @Slipstream:
That’s weird, because my flaregun and my compression blast are probably the better of my Pyro abilities! I cannot do W + M1. =O

  18. shtank responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 6:05 am #

    @Slipstream

the pyro’s flame length does decrease when you’re running forward, from 366 units (i think) to about 300

  19. Laharl responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 6:19 am #

    Holy shit; Really. Holy ,shit.

    Okay, everyone, remember the lesson.

    1.Burn the guy

    Then, two ways :

    2.Hide
    3.Hit with Fireaxe

    Or

    2. Air blast
3.Take quickly your fireaxe and hit!

Some impressive use of the Flare Gun, but as waebi said. Pubs.

as awesome as he is, and as awesome as newman is, the sad thing is that a fight between the two would be hugely unertertaining:
“best shotgun aim wins”, or “person who switches to shotgun wins” if the other guy doesn’t.

  22. Slipstream responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 7:31 am #

@Clanky: Be thankful, sir. Be bloody thankful.

@shtank: Yeah, but perhaps just a feeeeeeew more units off would remedy the problem…

Not as good as newman… he might be able to do a pyro video, but can he consistently play pyro well WITHOUT flamer?

  28. Mr. Noobinator responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 11:07 am #

    uh…a pyro without his flamer is fail. its in the frickin’ name >_>;;;

  29. Mr. Noobinator responded on 20 Feb 2009 at 11:13 am #

in the case of Don Newman, that guy must be very lucky to get lots of axe kills. his use of the flaregun and the AB jumping is interesting though

do NOT call Don Newman “lucky” if you have not seen him play a normal game.

Videos like this remind me how much i like the pyro.

On a related note, while perusing the blag-o-sphere and such, I stumbled upon this dood here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsgVhArwx7k&feature=PlayList&p=C0ADACC85FEFC65F&index=2

Pyrorockstar seems to like his style as well, as he recently featured The_Driver’s “how to pyro” video (W1 + Mouse1 = STRON, lol):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7v8PLiMr1c&feature=PlayList&p=C0ADACC85FEFC65F&index=0

He MIGHT just be lucky, but I don’t think all that air-blast juggling is all luck. But in all seriousness, I would have to think that this dood is one of the better pyros on the interwebs; not just for his skills (?), but also because his appreciation for the class.

Anyway, enough of my blathering. Watch the videos already.
