The Red Knight Casting Call

A few months ago, I told you the wonderful story of Don Newman, the amazing cold pyro. As mentioned in the article, there was a machinima in his name in the works. The time has come, and work has begun!

The Red Knight is a webisode series in the works, with Don taking the place of Batman in the film The Dark Knight. That’s all we can tell you at the moment, but we need some help! We are currently in need of:

TF2 Cinematographers (help, not actual work)
Skinners/Skilled Photoshoppers More still welcome, but main parts already filled
Mappers (we will need 3 maps total, but one person doesn’t have to make all 3)
Modeler (one prop for now)
Voice Talent:

    Joker (taken)
    Harvey Dent (contested)
Jim Gordon (IN DIRE NEED OF)
Cameo bits (requires high-quality/condenser mic and/or pop screen)
Do not be afraid to try other parts as well! We may need them in the future!

Contact me via Skype if you want a voice talent tryout, my name is tpmx13.

Contact the individuals below via Steam friend invite or Ubercharged group message for anything else.

TPMX (casting director)
Peter Mansbridge (director)

Rewards for helping is credit in both the video and in the post on Ubercharged once released. You will also recieve Ubercharged.net Percentage Points (may or may not exist). We hope to have something by May, so keep tuned in to see the webisodes and trailers!

Does this count as contacting you? I’d like to try out (and fail unless it’s by default, of course) for voicing a part or two)

  2. Paper Shadow responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 8:12 am #

    No. No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This is the perfect time for my computer to break, with little hope of being fixed, isn’t it? This would’ve been a great mapping test for myself… :S

Well, I still have a mic, I guess I might be able to do some voices…

  3. Sibchak responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 8:18 am #

YEES! I cant wait. All though I doubt my prepubescent voice could have a part in the film :/. meh. oh well.

  4. TPMX responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 8:32 am #

Contacting means adding me to your friends list (or Peter) and messaging me. Tryouts will be with the current crew. If you’re a voice actor, be ready to talk. If you’re a cinematographer, just tell us how to film TF2 videos well. If you’re anything else, have some examples.

Hey man, lemme know what you need skin-wise when I see you on steam.

  6. Himmelstoss responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 9:00 am #

I could do a minor role for voice-overs – maybe a couple lines here and there. I’m pretty good at voice imitation overall, but I don’t have as much time as I’d like.

  7. Jonii responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 9:15 am #

And by “tryout over Steam,” you mean…?

It’s been a dream of mine as an actor and someone who enjoys doing voices to be in a machinima.

  8. Corodan responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 11:00 am #

    What about cameo’s? :D

  9. General Goose responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 11:04 am #

We should have a machinima series based on Ubercharged.net.

I have to see that when it comes out.

  10. SAC responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 11:24 am #

Awesome! Now I just have to watch the Dark Knight…

  11. SAC responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 11:26 am #

Question, though, is there any other contact method? I don’t want to have to add myself to your Steam friends list unneccesarily… yeah, I know what that feels like. O_O

  12. TPMX responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 11:58 am #

By “tryout over Steam,” I mean…invite me over Steam and talk to me. If you feel uncomfortable doing that, just contact me via the ubercharged group.

That poster was pure pwnage. It oozed the serious undertone of the original dark knight movie, yet captured the comical side of the pyro through his pose all too well.

  14. Jesse responded on 07 Jan 2009 at 2:56 pm #

I know a mapper, I’ll talk to him and see if I can convince him to help.

Just thought I’d chip in here and remind everyone this is just a fun project that we’re doing for ourselves. This seems to have incited debate about how we’re “inflating” don’s ego as a so-called celebrity.

Come on guys, leave the debate about Don’s style of play somewhere else. We’re just doing this for fun.

  16. Shimmer responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 3:09 am #

Don Newman is a pretty cool guy. He uses axe and doesn’t afraid of anything.

  17. Slipstream responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 4:12 am #

Now, I myself am very interested in this project – especially as it is combining two brilliant things; talented Pyros and GOOD Batman films (Batman and Robin is not even good enough to be a FILM).
However, I have a few questions to ask about this:

    1) Will this machinima series follow the Dark Knight script strictly or will be loosely based on it?

    2) Will it be filmed entirely in Team Fortress 2 or will it involve use of Garry’s Mod?

    3) Say I wanted to do choreography. Would I require access to the live recording of the scene in-game or would I be sent the shot for editing?

If you could answer those questions, it would help clarify things not just for myself, but for others. I may also express interest to helping in Don Newman’s takeover of the machinima world.
    And soon the world itself.
    And then beyond…
And then I’ll overthrow him, of course. But for now, I’ll bide my time…

  18. TGF responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 4:56 am #

What type of photoshopping would you guys need exactly?

  19. TPMX responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 8:18 am #

Shimmer: in proper format, it’s “I think Don Newman is a pretty cool guy. eh uses axes and doesn’t afraid of anything.

Slipstream: 1) We will be taking some liberties with the script as a straight Dark Knight remake would be uncreative.

    2) It will use Garry’s Mod in some portions.

3)We need tips on how to use demos to record (aka go into third-person, freecam, set up at specific angles, etc.)

TGF: Photoshopping is just skinning. We need a character skin or two at the moment.

  20. nalfang responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 10:56 am #

Hmm. Do you guys require a dialogue writer? That’s my only specialty.

  21. Whimsical Goofball responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 3:48 pm #

This sounds like fun… but I can’t seem to add these guys to my friends list. Clearly I’m an idiot.

Must find a way to express interesting in doing voice work for them…

  22. Slipstream responded on 09 Jan 2009 at 6:30 pm #

    Thanks for the answers TPMX.

Now, due to my interest, I can only see a couple of jobs I could be capable.
I might be able to do latter cinematography, say if you sent me a clip and I said what could be improved (angle, distance, focus, etc), but since this seems like a bit of a hassle, I doubt this would be acceptable.

So, it looks like voice work might be my option. Would help if I knew which character I had to play, but…
I could do minor roles and such. People have told me my Joker voice is good, though I don’t know if we have a Joker in this.

    Conundrums and complexations ahoy.

  23. Nosedigger responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 2:13 am #

Newnight’s in it? Good. I can’t get enough of his “COME HERE, NEWMAN!”

  24. Direction responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 2:35 am #

TPMX, hit me up over steam if you want an aussie voice, I have a nice recording setup :D

  25. SAC responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 7:01 am #

Thanks, TPMX. I’m actually a nub to Garrys Mod, but if you need another hand around, I can move junk around and pose faces and stuff.

As for voicing, how would that work? Just contact you for details? I’ve got several tones and a few accents, incl. British, Southerner, German, Irish, French… Spy… Pyro…

  26. Matt responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 7:05 am #

I’d love to help, but I’m not good at anything. I’ll be an extra, maybe? Hmm. Anyway, Whimsical Goofball should definitely do some voice work. My endorsement goes to him.

  27. SirMax responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 7:34 am #

As far as voices, is the aim to capture the character or try to imitate the original voice?

  28. Direction responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 10:43 am #

    Oh yeah, Goofball is incredible!

  29. sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 12:07 pm #

I’d be happy to provide some voices.

  30. SAC responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 4:05 pm #

    Who be goofball?

Also, how does one get invited to join Don Newman in-Training? I currently have the most fireaxe kills by 80 points on my server. :D

  31. Whimsical Goofball responded on 10 Jan 2009 at 10:46 pm #

Ah! I didn’t spot the Skype bit before. I’ll just go through that channel, since my messaging abilities within Steam seem less than existent.

Incidentally, I’ve been practicing my Joker vice. Might come in handy.

  32. TPMX responded on 11 Jan 2009 at 2:24 am #

    Blargh, lots of questions.

    1) No, we don’t need a dialogue writer. A lot we’re lifting up from the actual script, so there’s not much need for it.

    2) Skype for the voice tryouts, although add Steam as well if you’d like. Sometimes I can’t talk, and I can relay you what I think through Steam.

    3) Know that the Joker spot is well-contended with lots and lots of good talent. We can’t spend too much time on Joker tryouts because we need to train our Heath Ledger. Ledger was a method actor who essentially tortured himself to get the character, so we need time for lots of practice.

    4) If you have a condenser mic or a pop screen, your chances are higher for making it into this film.

    5) Don is currently away at college, so sadly he can’t take questions.

Keep the auditions going, we’re doing better than we initially thought we would!

  33. Don Newman responded on 11 Jan 2009 at 11:28 am #

Hello everybody I’m Don Newman, welcome to the broaaadcaaast.

First let me say THANK YOU for all of the support that I have received from the TF2 players and communities that put up with my antics. I’d also like to thank TPMX for handling all of this and publicizing it as needed. The Red Knight was, for a while, just a joke we threw around. It has become so much more due to his efforts and that of my friend Peter Mansbridge.

I will not be able to play TF2 for a while, as I don’t have the luxury of a computer that can run it whilst at university. But if anyone wishes to axe me a question or just have a chat, please don’t hesitate to add me via steamfriends. As for my involvement in the Red Knight project: I will chip in as needed, but for those in the know, the ‘character’ Don Newman is one I have cultivated out of voice clips of the TV pundit himself. Thus, I hope that the machinima reflects this to a degree. The fascinating part about the ‘character’ Don Newman is that he has taken on a personality of his own, independent of either myself or the real Don Newman (who I am sure would be appalled to see his good name used in such a ridiculous fashion).

To conclude, my thanks again to all the contributors and supporters of this project: we couldn’t do it without you. And of course one big thanks to Don Newman and the CBC for their wonderful broaaadcasast.

  34. SAC responded on 11 Jan 2009 at 8:51 pm #

You sound nothing like Don Newman!

Anyway, if it’s particular voices you’re looking for, I haven’t seen the Dark Knight so I’m prolly not much help.

  35. Shimmer responded on 11 Jan 2009 at 10:39 pm #

    Spah playing mah Joker.

Dent and Gordon aren’t so obvious in terms of what class will play them. Though Sniper seems to pop up in my mind for both. Huh.

Congrats Whimsical Goofball- I bow out to you.
