TF Zoo: The Engineer

Hello once again to another TF Zoo! This one is particularly special, because at the end of this article, you will be asked to submit your idea of an animal that mostly resembles one of the remaining classes.
In this article, we will be classifying the our favorite Texan that has 11 PHDs in hard science.
(Image courtesy of Gameogre.com and google image search.)

Now ,we all know the engie is useless by himself, so he relies on his buildings. An engie can really give area denial just by buildin’ a sentry. Now think about this for a second.
If a player joins a server with no engineers, decides to play as one,and sets up a sentry in, let’s say the roof of the building near the second cap of Badwater, he’s setting a trap. Then, all he has to do is wait. Wait untill that first scout comes running toward that sentry. Pretty soon, the sentry will start to rack up kills.

So you’ll ask yourself, “Gee,I wonder what kinda’ animal compares to that!

Well, save the thinking for the pros. (Until later)

Closest Relation: Trapdoor Spider

Now, the name seems to explain itself after what I just wrote, but since my community service writing these articles isn’t finished, let me explain.

The spider positions itself somewhere where all the little, tasty bugs will crawl over, much like an engineer to a vital choke point. Then, it blends in with the tree’s texture and pattern. It waits until all the bugs start to crawl right over it’s opening, then opens it and shuts it very quickly, killing most bugs. The spider alone can not kill to easily, so it relies on it’s “tools”.

That just about wraps up this article, but like I said before, the person who give the best basic animal comparison will be featured in the next TF Zoo article! So get out your thinking caps children, because the remaining classes are:
-The Heavy
-The Medic
-The Demo
-The Soldier
-The Sniper
-The Pyro
-And The Demo

We’ll see you next time for another exciting article of TF ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

P.S. Thanks nalfang!

Bah, I can’t find the ‘Does not equal’ sign…

    Either way, Pyro /= Dragon

…For future referance to people who suggests otherwise…

    P.S. Good Article!

@: Paper Shadow. I thought “Not Equal To” was shown through =/=

@: Topic in general: Heavy is bear. Just putting it out there.

    @Paper Shadow
    @LaZodiac
    not equals: !=
or, if you want the fancy math one, on a Mac it’s option-equals (?)

I think the Medic is like a “Cleaner Fish” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleaner_fish

The (Cleaner Fish/Medic) provides services to other (fish/team mates) in order to feed its (stomach/Ubercharge)

  8. 2tone responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 12:18 pm #

    Sniper: Mongoose

Medic: Remora (a fish what helps clean wounds and feeds on parasites from larger sea life)

    Eh, I dunno.

Good article though, but in all respect, F*CK SPIDERS.

  9. Rodney responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 12:24 pm #

Sniper is like a spitting frog or those lizrds with long tungs
Heavy is probably a komodo dragon
Medic is probably a cleaner fish like the other comments
Demo is a venus fly trap
    Soldier is a gorilla
Pyro is a unicorn because of the mysterious nature of both something less frilly

Sniper = one of those lizards who sits on a rock for an hour waiting for the right time, them boom, nabs its prey.

I would also like to point out that the scout has already compared the heavy to a bear, a “big shaved bear that hates people”

HAHA! Wow dude, you totally called it.

For the record the cleaner fish was my idea 2stone!

  16. Kollega responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 4:06 pm #

For me,Heavy seems just… too heavy for bear.I think he’s closer to elephant or gippo. And yes,the Medic is a Cleaner Fish, because he helps people in exchange for kill assists and Ubercharge buildup. And one more thing,Crabguy.Couldn’t you find an apropriate crab for the Spy article?

  17. Mike Peck responded on 04 Dec 2008 at 4:59 pm #

The heavy is a bear or possibly a shark, if you do the whole “Medic is Remora.”

Pyro has to be a Copperhead, a close range sritker whose ‘bite’ is carried out over time.

Flog sounds good for sniper, sitting there waiting for the fly and…bam.

Solly has to be a barracuda, a creature of force.

    Demo…I don’t know.

    No.SHHHHH.

    Also,don’t forget the demo!
    …please?

  20. Tweedledum responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 2:30 am #

I think the Medic and Heavy relationship is like of the hippos and those birds that clean them, or, as assumed before, a cleaner fish and a shark.
Pyro is a scorpion – he’s “close-range”, has damage over time and is scary as feck.
Spy is that type of wasp that has no wings, resembles an ant and uses it to prey on real ants. He could also be a chameleon because of camouflage, his one-hit kills and, as we know from “GENTLEMEN.” his eyes can be facing different directions.
Scout is a fly – he’s fast, can quickly change direction and is annoying. Just replace the buzz with “needadispenserhere”.
Demoman, in his current state, is a human – he just destroys everything that stands in his way. And even if he got nerfed, seriously, you can’t compare him to any kind animal.

  21. Tweedledum responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 2:50 am #

Wait, those wasps just look like ants. It’s actually spiders who mimic ants. Here’s what wikipedia says:

“Ant-mimicking spiders also modify their behavior to resemble that of the target species of ant, for example many adopt a zig-zag pattern of movement, ant-mimicking jumping spiders avoid jumping, and spiders of the genus Synemosyna walk on the outer edges of leaves in the same way as Pseudomyrmex.”

I think it indeed resembles how good spies mimic the class they are disguised as, or at least used to before no one fell for the disguises anymore.

Oh come on, though fantasy dragons aren’t real creatures, komodo dragons certainly are… And I can’t think of a better match for the pyro! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komodo_dragon

    - If you see one coming for you, you’re certainly going to get the hell out of the way.
    - It attacks live prey by sneaking up and ambushing them, usually from behind.
    - When it attacks, it can simply bite prey once, not instantly killing it. Instead, the vicious bacteria from its mouth infects the victim, slowly killing it over time.
    - Logically, komodos are immune to this sort of infection from other komodos.
    - It has trouble with water.
    - It uses a special tube (gasmask) for breathing sometimes.
    - Depending on the size (HP) of it’s prey, it can either swallow it whole (ambush and fry a Scout instantly), or for larger prey, bites (flame) while holding down (stay in melee) it’s victim.
    - Komodos are capable of non-sexual reproduction, making gender somewhat irrelevant.

  23. Doomsday One responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 4:58 am #

I was bored, so I thought I’d bring these two ideas out there.
Sorry they’re both dogs, it was the first thing that came to mind.

    Firstly, the Medic.
German, relatively fast, intelligent, reliable and loyal. A protector/rescuer of sorts.
    Meet: The German Shepherd Dog.
German, relatively fast, intelligent, reliable and loyal. A protector/rescuer of sorts.
And no, I didn’t just copy and paste the above points.
Also, according to the Wikipedia page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shepherd_Dog
Many have a red/black colo(u)ring, and a rarer variation is blue. Paper Shadow said in passing that this is sadly true of TF2, you’re more likely to find medics on RED than on BLU.
Just to hammer the relation in more, some cuttings from the paragraph on Wikipedia under ‘Temperment’:
Marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose.
A Loyal nature and bond well with people they know.
They can become over-protective of their family and territory.
An aloof personality makes them approachable, but not inclined to become immediate friends with strangers.
Highly obedient and not easily distracted.

This one I saw in passing, and I thought it was a little bit like the Heavy.
    The Rottweiler.
Big and strong for a dog and good for guard duties.
I don’t really have much of a link here, but the picture next to ‘Temperment’ reminds me of the Heavy anyway.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rottweiler#Temperament

Anyway, good luck with the next article! Looking forward to reading it!

    @2tone:

While reading this my first thought was, Scout = Mongoose.

Small creature that is able to take out stronger, better equipped cobras simply because it is so much faster. However the Mongoose doesn’t always win, one bite from the cobra and its down.

  25. Wyatt responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 5:06 am #

Demo is easy, Bombardier Beetle. One of the few animals that actually can explode.

When messed with the beetle mixes hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide in its body to produce a powerful burning chemical that will drive away most creatures that threaten it. Plus it makes a boom sound, very nice. Well more like a pop but you get the idea.

  26. Slipstream responded on 05 Dec 2008 at 6:57 pm #

The Heavy seems to me like the Hippopotamus.

-They usually travel in small groups (Heavies with their Medics and Medic Bodyguards).
-While hippos rest near each other in territories in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land (Heavies are defensive classes that remain near control points, but rather defend them than capture them).
-The hippopotamus is recognizable for its barrel-shaped torso, enormous mouth and teeth, hairless body, stubby legs and tremendous size (…obvious enough).
-The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive animals in the world, and is often regarded as the most dangerous animal in Africa (the Heavy is also regarded as the most aggressive and dangerous).
-They are still threatened by poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth, and by habitat loss (Heavies are often the most hunted, especially by Snipers and Spies).

I could note some more, but that’s the gist and most effective points.
