It should. I keep saying it should involve at least, say, groups going around, perhaps a sniper lagging behind to assist. A guy with an autoshottie at range distracting while the guy with the M4A1 takes aim. The opportunities and possibilities are few and far between (even if there were 10X that amount, I doubt it would beat TF2 in terms of teamwork), but they ARE there! It’s just that no one ever seems to do it. EVER.

Then why don’t you make it so they only kick/ban if there are more than a certain number of wierd characters or something? I think it’s unfair if someone gets kicked/banned just because their “o” has a cross through it or something like that.

I actually had someone on my server who had put a newline, among other garbage, in his game handle. It is idiots like that, which I am trying to keep off of my server. I think it is up to the game server admin to make the call about what should or should not be allowed on their own servers. If they don’t want to change their nick, to accommodate the rules of a server, they can find another server to play.

Having said that, I wanted something like this for my game servers. This sort of automated kicking/banning for lame nick characters is already common place on IRC. I could not find a script anywhere to perform this action for Source servers. So, I ran with the idea, and decided to share with those who read this thread. I hope that other game server admins find the script useful. It is one way of addressing the problem, identified in this post. Is it the best way to deal with this problem? That is probably debatable.

One final thought, I released the script as open source. If anyone finds the script useful; needs help to adjust it to their own needs; finds a bug; has a suggestion for improvement; or just wants to complain about it being a draconian piece of garbage. I welcome, any and all, feedback. Some game server admins may just want to warn such users. In such cases, the script could be altered to merely warn the player with the ‘rcon say’ command. Rather than outright kicking or banning the player.

Also, on as goofy a server as UC’s, why don’t we have votekick to take care of that heavy who insists on minigunning while we’re dancing/bonesaw-only-ing/whatever?

I mean, what if it’s just one letter? What if they just felt like fancying up their name a bit? God forbid a little bit of variety!
