Fame! Fortune! It’s yours for the taking!
Hey there, pal! Why so glum? Not you! Him! The Soldier with the sorry frown!
What’s that? You want a successful TF2 related webcomic, but don’t know how to do it? Well, put me in a dress and call me Suzie, I know how to fix this! Infact, I’m an expert on the topic, being the major star in many TF2 webcomics! Turn that frown upside down because, you too, my friend, can share my fame in just three - don’t be shocked, you heard me correctly - just three easy steps!
1. Have at least two main characters. If they are both Engineers, even better!
2. Have one of the characters turn out to be a Spy, who back stabs the other character!
3. Bask in your glorious fame and the laughter of many!
Now, go out there and ‘em tiger! Your fame awaits!!
…
Okay, lets be a bit more serious here. If you are a big fan of TF2, you’ve probably read some one off TF2 comics, recently or long ago, sort of like this one. What does this comic have in common with many others? The punchline is a Spy (however, that being said I must admit, I did get a good chuckle out of that particular comic that I haven’t with many other Spy-related punchlines).
The Spy seems to have generated a lot of attention for himself, even by people who don’t even play the game. Not by himself, either; his trusty companion the Engineer has come along with him. “Spah sappin’ mah Sentry!” is a phrase all of us will know too well. The jokes at the start weren’t too bad, infact some authors put a bit of a twist on it (scroll down to the bottom of the article). But now that TF2 will be coming up to it’s first birthday in a few months, I just think the puns are starting to run a bit… Dry.
In games, when you initially start the game, you have no idea who is on the enemy team. For all you know, they could be a bunch of mindless eejits. This is the perfect time for a Spy to make his move, when they don’t know you exist. But as the game goes on, and you start to Back stab people more than you can chew, your victims will get paranoid and everyone’s favourite Pyro will start flaring his flamethrower at everyone to try and catch you out. In short, after a while they expect you to be there after so many times you’ve killed them. That really goes the same for these comics. Now whenever I see a comic which has an Engineer in it with his Sentry in the first panel, I know almost like a sixth sense the last panel will involve that bugger of a Spy. The worst part is, 90% of the time, I’m right.
For those who have seen The Dark Knight film - “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villian.” Well, it might be appropriate to use that phrase here. I think we should bury these terrible punchlines before they start to become a burden to everyone, look back at the few good ones and move on to much more original punchlines.
Besides, I’m sure the Engineers don’t want their stuff sapped. For the millionth time.

Don’t believe you. Think you’re a spy.
Seriously, though, I agree with you. The “OMG he’s actually a spy lololol” joke is done to death, to the extent it’s very rarely funny. With so much going on in TF2, you’d expect some fresh material somewhere along the line, but noooo…

1. Draw and engineer.
2. Draw a heavy.
3. Uhoh, heavy’s a spy!
4. ????
5. PROFIT!!

loafaries: Haha, I was tempted to do that, but I didn’t want to be accused of memeism
Muser91: The link to the comic I posted about the red spy was posted before the one on 1Fort and I just posted it to show people who haven’t seen it. If you mean the article as a whole, I’m not a regular of 1Fort so I don’t know what he writes.

Dun dun DUUUUUUUUUN

If I had drawn the full spy, you’d be looking at his back in the picture so I think it’s the right way around.
Also I did that because I find drawing fingers on my graphics tablet kind of difficult (along with circles).
If anything, call it my poetic license.

I’ve said the same thing before on multiple occasions. That’s how it goes though. Some guys make funny comics where a spy is posing as a girl on the interwebs, etc etc, and the next thing you know everyone is imitating.
However, I have always loved that one you referred to where the spy has to live with the blue team. I thought that was genius.

This no longer needs to be said: it’s well known that at least half of the TF2 fanbase are idiots. Just look at that horrifying sacrilege that is Nerf Now.
loafaries responded on 24 Aug 2008 at 1:06 pm #
Mmm, yeah, Nerf Now isn’t exactly the epitome of intelligence, even though they’re a step above “OMG SPAH” jokes.
This comic always makes me giggle, though.
