JUST LET ME USE MY MIC!!
Allright, so we’ve all heard them, those annoying little kids with their annoying high voices screaming internet memes over the mic. Yes we all hate them, yes we all mute them. They are the cancer that’s killing /b/, and they never help their team. Unfortunately, good helpful players with higher voices are getting written off and muted just because they are mistaken for someone that doesn’t know how to play the game.
Yes, I HELP the team… do you?
We’ve got an Ubered Pyro coming into our left entrance, let’s get some airblasts to keep ‘em away from the sentries.
Now I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a “Late-Bloomer”, aw hell, I wear size 12 pants for cryin’ out loud. So I have a high-pitched voice, and I admit that. However, I DO NOT scream out annoying internet phrases. I actually use my mic to help better the team. Calling out incoming ubers, spotting sentries, and just general team encouragement.
So why is it that no one listens to me, even when I have the best plan? Even when I’m telling those Scouts to not rush in before I sticky up the sentry? IT’S LIKE I’M NOT EVEN TALKING! And when someone does acknowledge that I exist and responds to me, it’s just to complain about my voice.
No, I will not shut up.
SHUT UP! You sound like a frickin’ four year old!
Well I’m sick and tired of it. I’m sick and tired of being a helpful teammate, sacrificing my points for the team just to get screamed at to shut up. However, I’m not gonna change a damn thing. I’m writing this rant to tell you that YOU need to change.
FRICKIN’ DEAL WITH IT.
I mute the griefers too, but I DON’T mute those that are helpful, but just have an annoying voice. So listen, DON’T mute me, DON’T complain, LISTEN to what I say, DO what I tell you, and don’t EVER write off someone just for their voice.
I’m going to use my mic. And I’m going to use it whenever the hell I feel like it.

Yeah, I get people telling me to shut up when I’m talking in online games.
Usually it’s my wife downstairs telling me to stop yelling at the computer though. I tell her I’m not yelling at the computer, but at the people in the game. And she’s like “oh, so you talk to your little friends inside the computer. That’s much more normal…”
:/

I have a deep voice and I get the same. I just have a higher voice somedays. No, really.
Honest.
Srs.
>:
I’ve learned to work around it though. Just don’t talk in a definitive or commanding way. Instead of saying “Let’s get some airblasts so they don’t kill the sentry”, say “If we get some airblasts, they won’t reach the sentry.” This is still annoying in the way it sounds like you’re teaching the people something obvious. Take a pick, I guess.
Ever notice that women never complain about the high voices? JOE IS BIGGER THAN ITTY-BITTY BABY NOOBY. JOE THINK YOU NEED MOAR MEN. lolinstincts.
P.S Stay away from surf servers. They’re chockablock with the underage b& that make people paranoid of anyone with a high voice.

@Mooman: A girl I’m friends with from TF2 constantly complains about 10 year old kids with high voices…
I was always mad about this too, back when I was eleven. I admit I still do have a bit of a high voice and I get asked occasionally. I found that as long as I just totally ignore those people, there’s generally more people who are okay with it. Let them mute you, let them ignore you. They’ll know you were right when you guys lose.
Or you could just be a whiny little kid with a high voice who actually is wrong. Who knows?
Buckjarky responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 12:05 am #
I used to use a mic and I have an pretty low voice for my age(16). People kept thinking I was some old wanting to do creepy stuff. WTF, why dont people just play the game? I’ve met annoying people with high voices, but if they’re going to help why would you mute them?
jinja_ninja responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 12:06 am #
I can see where the OP is coming from…BUT…
The only reason I mute high pitched voices is not because of bad advice/info, its because it HURTS MY FRICKIN EARS!
Your high-pitched whining makes my ears bleed.
Although your advice is good, I’m sure.
Here’s a cookie.

@Commie pinko lefty traitor: Theory failed. Bugger. Mind you, is this particular 10 year old just especially annoying? Are we even allowed to have interviewlike conversations in a comment section?
@Headwound: That’s worked for me before. Some bloke was raging at me when i was playing sniper. Eventually they start calling me a girl. I decide just to toy with him a bit and at one point go “Pretty good, no? :p” He responds with “Yeah, pretty good for a girl.” Then I agreed with him. He didn’t whine any more. Victory!
Yay for airheadery in an overly optimistic tone!

You’re sixteen. You use caps alot. You just cried about it on ubercharged and gave them the lulz they were looking for.
My advice is to brush it off. Mute and move on.
I have to agree with MooMan. Telling people “Let’s get some airblasts so they don’t kill the sentry” will not be received well on most pubs. Give information to your teammates, not orders.
Narxide responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 1:15 am #
I’m getting the same response but it’s because i’m just a motor mouth when it comes to TF2, i have a regular pitch i really need to learn when to shut up :/
Whimsical Goofball responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 1:32 am #
Amen to that! I get so frustrated when a kid uses his mic and gives helpful information, only to have someone tear him to pieces for being a kid. He’s being a useful team mate unlike you who only uses the mic to complain! HOW ABOUT YOU SHUT UP?!
On that note, I also do all in my power to be a helpful team mate only to have my team mates ignore me and be generally useless. Whether it be alerting my team mates that I’m about to sap a sentry and could use some help finishing it off, or requesting a little help as an engie when five spies are constantly trying to sap the only sentry covering a point. More often than not, not a single bloody player listens to me.
I sap a sentry, not a single ally comes to my aid and the sentry sap fails… and it never gets destroyed and we lose. My sentry defends the final point, it gets destroyed and we lose… and God knows where my allies are.
TEAM Fortress you bastards! TEAM!!! If you’re not gonna help out, go back to Unreal Tournament!

My regular server has a couple of women that play and I gotta imagine that their voices are even higher than yours but you’d be foolish not to listen to them. Good players with good strategy.
My advice, talk slower coded one. You get excited, you start talking faster and then it sounds like an assault by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I can relate…ish. I’m a 17-year-old girl who sounds like a 15-year-old boy. XD So I get a lot of flak for my voice, as well.
I admit I’m guilty of snapping at the occasional 12-year-old, although I don’t think I’ve ever met one that’s been helpful. I think a lot of the stereotype comes from the fact that TF2 is rated M, and if you don’t sound mature, you’re probably not old enough to play the game. People automatically assume you’re not going to play the game well, or be mature about arguments that come up or what have you. Frankly, I’ve played with 30-year-olds that acted like they were five.
Mister Muffin Man responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 3:42 am #
I often feel guilty for never talking. I even have a mic for my PC, but, well, English is my second language, which means I have a really bad accent, so I’d rather not talk and just hope people accept it.
At least I listen to good advice.
Coded One responded on 22 Aug 2008 at 4:08 am #
Wow, lot of mixed opinions in here.
I especially like all the people that are telling me to shut up… Really keep going. I’m enjoying this.
But the thing is, I’m not telling the team what to do. I really just call out sentries and tell Meds when to pop Ubers, it’s just that the players of TF2 seem to expect only “Mature” people to play, as many of these comments prove.

I used to be annoyed by high pitched voices on games. But that was a couple years ago when I thought “hey I’m finally old enough to buy M rated games myself, I’m so grown up and can totally make fun of the young ‘uns.”
That didn’t last too long, because shortly after I decided to start making fun of the kiddies I played Sven Coop with someone who when asked (not by me) why his voice was so high he said “duh, because I’m ten.” He then proceeded to get the highest score by about fifty.
So now I tend to respect the good ones and quietly mute the annoying ones.

Look, my voice dropped when I was pretty young, and my height increased dramatically, so I’m tall enough, deep enough, to act like someone older than I am. But the annoying thing is that if you tell them you’re a kid, you’re ignored for being a stupid illiterate who stereotypicaly would spend his days playing with LEGO or so.
Which, is discrimination, which is the thing I hate the most
Jigglesthefatman responded on 03 Dec 2008 at 5:53 pm #
For the record no, I’m not immature (that much, I hope) and somewhat hypocritical in the fact that some kids shouldn’t be let on the internet since the vast majority post horrible fanfiction (ugh, soiled myself with the latter word) or run around on forums and games calling people noobs for whatever juvinille reason.
Also hate the scout for his aggrivating personallity, he’s like the kid who you tell to stop or you’ll hit him (child friendly, I know) and pushes you to see if you do. Of course, then you hit him and he cries, you get in trouble with the parent/gaurdian and the kid wins for pissing you off.

Hahaha, i’m the only 13 year-old here. And i ask you do i act immature in game, or on steam? Or do i have a high pitched voice? No. I am of high intelligence. (Note: when i say of high intelligence i mean not a retard or griefer or a n00b, well maybe a bit of a n00b) and i do not stand for team roomba wannabes. But some of my squeakier scout-like friends do make my ears bleed, and barely ever (if never) tell that theses a sentry around the corner that i’m about to run into. (Another note: If you want to spam me or prove me wrong, that i am a retard or that i do have a high pitched voice just add tanki54 to your friends list)

Sure, high-pitched kids being immature (swearing constantly, yelling random internet memes, boasting about their “conquests”) can be really annoying, but it’s also annoying if an older player does that, and they have NO EXCUSE, not even the weak ones younger players have.
And it’s just as immature moaning at a teammate who’s friendly and wants to help the team just because of the pitch of their voice.
Hissanrach responded on 09 Feb 2009 at 7:09 am #
If I were you, I would talk slower. Sound like you’re tired and unconcerned. At the same time, try to lower your voice. But before you try it out in a game, practice a little bit. You don’t want to make it sound like you are actually a kid just acting. Just be mature with that voice and people will listen to you.
I can’t help but be honest to you, I do mute people that have high pitched voices. But after a while I realized the guy I muted (his name was Ike) was a good player, so I listened to what he said. Now I think twice about muting people, hell I almost never do it. Someone playing the Soviet National Anthem is not annoying at all, it’s actually a nice song
Toakal responded on 25 Mar 2009 at 2:47 pm #
Being one of those who also has a high pitched voice due to my age,(Blame Feralt for making me join TF2 if you seriously hate “young’ns” and thier evil voices) I agree with this. I’ve only used my mic once to say that we could use another medic. Obviously, no one cared due to my High pitched voice. But, you can blame the time in which puberty occurs for that and the lack of electronic devices that can capture a young* person’s voice in a way that doesn’t hurt people’s ears…Heck, now that i think of it i could make a well planned, good rant on this…./dronesonandon…/
