Pyro gets busy over at Nerf Now
I posted a while back about Nerf Now, and the cool stuff that was going on comic strip wise with TF2.
It veered off onto a Starcraft tangent for a while, but it’s firmly back in Team Fortress 2 land with a story arc about the Pyro doing some “achievement grinding”…
Which brings interesting new perspectives to the whole “is Pyro male or female?” debate. Go read the comics, you’ll get what I mean.
And no, if you don’t get it. DO NOT ask here for an explanation. Go talk to your parents or something.

In addition, any site proudly showing off their Lighttpd and Ruby on Rails badges gets a nod from me.
All the PHP around here makes my head hurt sometimes. It’s a wonder wordpress even runs…
Stupid cheap hosting not supporting Rails…

Sorry for using your name in a comment, i just thought it would be funny to repeat what you said in the chat for that one screen shot. I did not know it would be taken seriously. Please don’t ban me, i love this site so much.
And can you please delete my IP from that comment, i don’t feel comfortable with it floating around.

Mr. madlep, I don’t get it! Explanation plz!
madlep responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 6:50 am #
@NOT MADLEP – done. No worries
@clubtheseals – Was just a comment a few posts back where someone posted as me.

I understand the not madlep thing. It’s the comic that has me confused!
madlep responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 6:59 am #
I think it’s something to do with the pyro getting an extra layer of protective latex.

To protect from burns?

Hm..? I don’t get it. :/
Prio responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 4:34 pm #
Protection is ESPECIALLY important in this case. It takes a dangerously long period of time for a Pyro to self-diagnose an infection, because it ALWAYS burns when they pee.
Prio responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 4:41 pm #
…damn it! Right after I press the submit button, I realize…
…do you think the good doctor has a Kritzkrieg version of those things…? 100% critical hits. Hmm.
*waggles eyebrows*
madlep responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 5:22 pm #
@Prio – “Kritzed… For her pleasure.”

These comics are awful. Genderbends? Anime cliches? Come on, that’s pathetic.
Mr. Noobinator responded on 29 Jul 2008 at 7:05 pm #
does it REALLY matter whether pyro’s a male or female? the way i see it, he/she’s still a flaming ass burner and a person with lack of artistic sense….wrapping a barbed wire around an axe, how smart
Xsjado responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 3:09 am #
@sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT: If by “pathetic” you mean “hilarious”, then yes.

No way, Nerf Now rocks.
madlep responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 7:54 am #
@sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT – Dunno what you mean by gender bend. It’s all pretty traditional what’s going on here. Sniper is very definitely female in the Nerf Now comics (as is Engie) – which you can see if you look back through the earlier ones. Pyro is male (or else why would he need “Uber” protection?). Doc looks male as well, although those pyjamas are pretty sissy.

Marcus responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 10:38 am #
@madlep Gah, that reminds me I need to update the badges. I moved servers about two weeks ago and switched from lighttpd+fastcgi to apache+passenger.
madlep responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 10:58 am #
@Marcus – cool. How is passenger? I’ve been meaning to give it a try on some of the apps at work.
Marcus responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 11:46 am #
@madlep – works great. It really simplifies deployment, and performance is on par or better than fastcgi. No more zombie process to worry about.
Oh, badges updated. I couldn’t find one for Passenger, so I had to come up something up quickly. Looks kinda flashy, but will have to do for now.

I like what the sniper “says” in Part 3. I hope the pyro had fun controlling her point.
*giggles*
General Balls responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 5:49 pm #
Well, I read it more as “You want to cap my point?”.
P. H. responded on 30 Jul 2008 at 7:12 pm #
I thought we could say “control” or “cap” interchangeably in this context. Darn language barrier.
(I’m not a native English speaker.)
slardeki responded on 31 Jul 2008 at 3:18 am #
loved part 1-3. Also loved the new one after showing the removal of the +50hp. Really captures the moment, without getting into the whole arguement if it was good or not.
I’m suprised there’s no post on that yet, actually.
sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT responded on 05 Aug 2008 at 6:34 pm #
How is the Sniper being a female not a genderbend?
madlep responded on 05 Aug 2008 at 9:00 pm #
@sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT – ok, I’m not down with the whole anime lingo. Define genderbend. Even wikipedia let me down, and google was returning some downright disturbing links when I searched for the term.
They drew the sniper as a female. Nothing too extreme there. Just a different character of the opposite sex.
To me, genderbending would entail the sniper in lycra, with red dyed hair, half done make up, and some odd placement of physical features. Possibly with a glam rock feel to the whole thing.
e.g. Bowie in the 70s.

McBillybob responded on 13 Sep 2008 at 2:57 am #
He’d better make it quick, he’s only protected for 10 seconds.
Tapp responded on 19 Dec 2008 at 3:05 pm #
The pyro is definately female. There is a pink purse above her suit in the locker, so short of a fat queer I think that settles it.
