I’m Totally Gonna Ubersaw So I Can Critzcrieg And Blutsaugher Your Ass - Medic Crap Announced (Finally)

Medic Gloves

Quick note, cause I’m sure that anyone who cares has already read this in the million other regular gaming sites that cover “the news”, but Shacknews has the details on the new Medic changes (and a bit about Goldrush and such).

All sounds lovely. The achievement stuff is still in there, which I’m a bit dubious about (I wanna play TF2 - not organize rigged servers with buddies just to grind achievements - except I don’t have any buddies, so I’m screwed either way), but it all sounds quite interesting. The old permanent health plan buff is out, and this stuff is in:

The Blutsaugher
For players that earn one third of the 36 new medic achievements, they will be given a new syringe gun. Called “The Blutsaugher,” this new weapon no longer has the ability to score critical hits against an opponent. Instead it will draw health from enemies each time a syringe hits. Especially useful as a weapon to retreat away from the fight while staying alive.

The Critzcrieg
Once a medic has earned two thirds of the achievements, they will be granted “The Critzcrieg.” This new medigun uses its ubercharge not for invulnerability, but to give its recipient 100% chance to fire critical ordinance. Medics and the player they are charging need to be careful though, because as much fun as it is to fire critical rockets as fast as you can, the other team will see what you’re up to and try to put a quick stop to your plan.

The Ubersaw
For the determined medic that has earned all 36 of the new achievements, they will find themselves the proud owner of “The Ubersaw,” which will take damage done in melee attacks and convert it directly to ubercharge. Four hits with this new weapon will fully charge whatever medigun the medic has equpped.

Seriously, I don’t know where these names come from. They must have one guy at Valve working round the clock who’s job description is “Smoke Some Crack And Then Think Up Whacked Names For Game Concepts”.

More scope for medic shenanigans all round. I’m picking we’ll see double uber/critzcriegs as a standard tactic as predicted some time ago.
double ubered medics (small size)
Oh, and now I’ll have to go and rebrand this whole site to critzcrieged.net (yes, I’ve already registered the domain name :P )

Well, that looks way OP… I’m gonna have some fun getting ubered by a clanmate, bonesawing four times (lolezmode?), ubering the mate, him bonesaw 4 times… see where I’m going with this?

Not only are these Achievements absurd but I dislike the idea of unlockables in TF2 and these look like they’re going to alter the TF2 we know and love - hopefully for the better, but I doubt it.

We had a discussion about the “double uber/critzcriegs as a standard tactic” yesterday and guess what the critzcrieg medic is not invulnerable. :D So he is a mere mortal ready to be popped.
Unless one holding Uber is juggling those two which reduces the uber time even further.

TF2 just got a lot of interesting from strategy point of view.

It wasn’t so long ago people were decrying Valve for messing with the “classic TFC”, now they’re accusing them of being evil villiains out to destroy our beloved game.

If it was anyone but Valve, I’d be seriously worried about balance here. But it IS Valve, and they usually know what they’re doing (and always fix it rapidly if they don’t). If it comes between Valve (who gave us the game) and some dude on the internet “doubting it”, I know whose side I’m on!

The only downside will be the scummy servers set up where people line up to manufacture the achievements and get the full loadout. On the downside, they’ll get the extra equipment before us. On the upside, we’re not them, and I think we’ll agree that “playing the game” always works out better than “lining up for four hours to ‘achieve’ something arbitrary”.

Scoring achievements is always enormous fun, and a huge new list will really freshen up the game. Which is the point - people are crying “it’ll change the game!” - but the makers are working to keep the experience fresh and new and interesting. Figuring out new strategies is BETTER FUN than just running your perfected Dustbowl 101 pattern again and again.

I’m with Luke on this one. Valve is known for it’s quality games. Logically, they won’t destroy everything they set up with this update. The unlockables doesn’t seems too OP. Not even the Ubersaw. What is NOT said in the article here, is that the Ubersaw is 20% slower than the regular Bonesaw, which was probably the slowest melee weapon of the game.

And even if players find unbalances, Valve will be sure to fix them up quickly. I have faith, and I find the lack of yours disturbing :P.

Yeah, another vote for Don’t Worry over here. I think the unlockables seem neat but not overpowered.

As for new achievement servers popping up, well… I just don’t think too many people will muster up the effort to do that. In the end, I think only a handful of people will run around Ubersawing enemies instead of healing.

More than likely, there will be servers that disable unlockable weapons and class-specific achievments in the “custom” section.

    I’m gonna stick to those.

The names of the new weapons are German, or at least partially. I guess it makes sense cuz the medic is German. “Blutsaugher” means “bloodsucker”, while “Critzcrieg” is a play on “Blitzkrieg”, which means “lightning war”. So it’s kind of like “crit war”.

I did like your joke about the crack-smoking Valve employee tho, so I’m not trying to be Mr. Correcty McCorrectypants. :)

  10. Pinko responded on 18 Apr 2008 at 8:54 am #

So I play scout, right? Almost exclusively. Greatest class ever.

And I’m gonna get ubered!!! WOOOOO! One of the achievements is to uber a scout, so I’m basically gonna be the coolest, happiest little scout ever!! Of course, there’s also the “Kill Fifty Scouts with a Needle Gun” one, so… crap.

  11. Josh responded on 18 Apr 2008 at 5:40 pm #

The achievement isn’t to uber a scout, it’s to have the ubered scout kill 4 people. Uber a class that’s not worth ubering, and have them kill 4 people in ten seconds? Yeah right.

These achievements range from difficult to impossible, and linking the weapon unlocks to them makes it even worse.

I’ll be farming these achievements on a Duel_Duel server with my friends, not putting up with this BS for achievements, especially when working to get them won’t help the team.

Someone’s forgetting the existence of the Critzcrieg.

  13. Stephen responded on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:20 am #

woah, wait a minute, are these serious? I’ve never heard of these, and they sound particularly crazy. I don’t even know about the 36 achievements. I’m a 360 version owner, so I’m wondering: have these changes not yet been released, or do owners of the xbox version miss out completely, like we do for new maps and party mode?

  14. Nordic responded on 30 Apr 2008 at 1:56 am #

The achievment have changed slightly. I think Valve realized that ten million healing points was a bit much, so now it’s 1,000,000.

  15. Kurt responded on 16 May 2008 at 12:11 pm #

I think achievements are a good idea but not to unlock weapons. I brought the game thinking everyone had the same chance as everyone else. (even valve said it was newbie friendly, which is now rubbish as if you can’t use a weapon, you won’t know what it can do! i.e. I wonder why the medic’s health is going up even though I keep shooting him?)

Achievements should just be fun things to try and achieve because you want to, not because its not fair if you don’t!
