New Medic Achievements Already Hidden on Your PC!
Valve has already sent the achievements your way
Murdoc has been totally kick ass, and has uncovered Valve’s dirty little secret - the medic achievements are already on your PC, hiding in plain sight. He emailed me earlier in the week, then I was slack, and didn’t post it, then he bugged me again, and it all works out
Just stumbled upon some amazing info!
I was poking around in the Valve Hammer Editor in the Source SDK (i was thinking of trying to make a level) and i found all the logos for the new medic achievements!to find them, open the Hammer level editor (its under tools in steam), fo “File”, then “New”. on the right hand side is a box with a brick texture in it. click “Browse” the you will see a load of textures. type “achievement” in the “Filter” box at the bottom, you will see all the current logos, and some from one of the Half life games, along with all the new medic ones! click on the individual logos to see the file name at the bottom of the screen, this gives a clue to what will have to be done to get each achievement. Most are fairly self explanatory.
Please tell the world! I was so excited to find this!
Just did a quick print screen and crop on the medic achievement pictures.
they all have pretty much the same file name that valve gave them, so a little open to interpretation of the details.
i have not assumed anything.
If you want to access the image files directly, you can use GCFScape, and extract them manually if you want.
A lot of these seem pretty self explanatory from their name and icon. But there are some obscure ones in the mix as well (heal grind? wtf?).
The word is that the new achievements coming out initially for medic, and later for the other classes as well, will be used to unlock new game features. I’m still not sold on the idea. I like to be able to play the game out of the box as is, with only player skill determining who can do what, not how long they have been on the achievement treadmill for. 10 bonesaw hits? Save falling teammates? Syringe a scout? This stuff sounds a little silly. Sure, let the kids brag that they got the achievement by giving them a novelty hat or pet or something cosmetic like that which doesn’t affect gameplay. But having to do this stuff in order to unlock game features sounds like a pain.
It’s early days, though. So I guess we’ve got a long way to see how these things work when fully flexed out.
So here they are
The icons are already there. I wonder if the code is already written and deployed awaiting some flag in a patch to activate it?

I can just see that “Bonesaw no misses” is going to result in some unfortunate shenanigans
“Bonesaw Medic” should result in some pretty interesting duals.
“Syringe scouts” sounds terrible - I reckon this will be the one keeping me away from the overcharger.
The rest look pretty alrightish - we might see some people healing someone other than the Heavy for once!
oh and very nice work Murdoc!!

syringing scouts isn’t that hard… you just need to aim higher than where they are, and in front of them
Do it all the time as a medic myself.

Nice find, good work man.
I wonder if maybe the (giant) syringe is going to be an unlockable, since it is already in TF2’s archives, (badly) textured and everything…
I’m not a fan of unlockables too… Can only hope Valve will do a good job…

I was having a look at the weapon models this afternoon too. all the grenades and things that didnt get used, and a load of random unused melee weapons too. the nail gun looked quite cool too.
I didnt see the giant syringe that you were talking about, so went back to look now and the folders have been moved.
there used to be a sub folder within the weapons folder that had all the TF2 models in, but it has now gone. and when i click on the recent models thing, i get an error when i try to view the TF2 weapons.
maybe Valve have had a bit more of an update and hidden them somewhere new!
crafty bastards!

you cant get to the medic achievements like that anymore either.
maybe shouldn’t of said how i found them.
oh well

when they first did that update you could look at these in your achievement list, i read them on steam long long ago.

Thanks for the great find. I’m nearing 200 overall medic hours and I can’t wait for this to go live! Linked your article from my website’s forums.

I wonder if these achievements are/could be retro active….
If someone HAS bonesawed XX people already, or killed a spy they accidentally healed, they should get SOME credit for it!!!
madlep responded on 31 Jan 2008 at 5:50 am #
@Ninjahedge - there’s a bit of a discussion on that at the Control Point Forums http://deadworkers.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=999
My guess is that they wouldn’t:
“I’d be guessing no as well, but for a different reason. Mainly just that they are designing and tweaking the achievement conditions as they go, and they wouldn’t have been collecting the data up until now to track if you have satisfied the conditions to collect the achievements.
Valve are logging some details already, but a lot of these are very specific, and I doubt their logging goes down to enough detail to support defining arbitrary achievements postdated back since the game came out.”

@Murdoc
The achievements are still inside of the gcf files (unless I’m misunderstanding you, and you’re talking about getting them of steamcommunity.com).
The achievements are located in the Team Fortress 2 Materials.gcf file at the path: tf/materials/vgui/achievements

I’m thinking some of those names are arbitrary.
I think what they look like is a bit different…
For example:
I think “Heal huge” is 10 consecutive syringe kills.
“Assist pyro” looks like “Keep a pyro alive while he sets 8 people aflame.”
“Assist heavy” looks like “Keep a heavy alive while he beats 4 people to death with only fists”
“Heal grind” is probably something to the effect of “stay alive for X rounds.
Still not sure what to make of “heal under fire”.

I would think that if this ends up being as bad as many think will be (i.e. Medic shenanigans for the sake of achievements rather than actually enhancing play), people will start setting up servers specifically to get achievement points. For example, people would log in and both teams would work together to get achievements for everyone (e.g. Blue scout would stand around letting the medic needle him, Blue player would be allowed to dominate red player and then the dominated Red player would hook up with a medic to get the revenge kill, etc…). I think this would be a good way for the community to “fight back,” so to speak.

P.S. it would also probably be necessary for everyone on such a server to get on Vent so that the “opposing” teams could communicate with each other.

@ anon
they are not in the original place that i happened upon them anymore. i downloaded that GCFScape program that Madlep referenced and found them your way too (after i posted here).
I couldnt seem to get the images out of it when looking via GCFScape though. it was only the first time i had used that program though.

@Murdoc
The issue with the vtf files of the new achievements is that they’re version 7.4, while the only versions VTFEdit (the program commonly used to convert VTF files into other file formats) will only open 7.1-3 files.
Conveniently, the only difference between 7.3 and 7.4 is some minor changes to the data structure (purely additions, so the image is in the same place). This means if you get your hands dirty with a hex editor you can manually change the versions back to 7.3 and then extract them normally

WHat if 2 mates go on a server and take it on turns to allow each other to get these achivements. Not sure about this update
Wormbrain responded on 28 Feb 2008 at 2:36 am #
I’m wondering if “Save Falling Teammate” would require a mid-air uber.
I share most of the concerns already voiced here. Promoting grinding like this just to get the achievement will likely cause major shenanigans.
Reminds me of SWG when everyone started grinding all professions to unlock the Jedi. Basically ruined the economy.

Isn’t the “Heal under fire” icon a BurgerKing’s Stacker?
tf player responded on 02 May 2008 at 5:18 pm #
wot achievements unlock which weapons??
madlep responded on 02 May 2008 at 5:51 pm #
@tf player - it’s based on the total number that you have unlocked.
If you get 1/3 then you get the first item, 2/3 gives you the next one, and you get the last one when you get all of them apart from two (I think)
